About The Position

Kern Medical is seeking a full-time Surgical Technologist to join their team. This role involves handling surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment while maintaining sterile technique during surgical or invasive procedures. The Surgical Technologist I is an entry-level position, while the Surgical Technologist II is an experienced, certified professional capable of working efficiently in a fast-paced surgical environment. Both levels require a strong understanding of procedures and the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team.

Requirements

• High School Diploma/GED
• Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technology Training Program
• Possession of American Heart Association Responder or Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) card at time of hire, or successful completion of training and qualification for RQI Responder certification within 60 days of employment.
• Continued condition of employment: maintain RQI Responder certification and competency.
• Strong working knowledge of aseptic technique.
• Demonstrate necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during operative procedures and maintain the sterile field.
• Maintain a high level of surgical conscience in professional behavior, demonstrating understanding and application of principles of surgical technology and legal, ethical, and moral responsibilities.
• Surgical Technician Certification required through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (for Level II).
• A minimum of 3+ years of experience in an acute care OR setting (for Level II).
• Validated competencies in all designated surgical sub-specialties (for Level II).
• If position responsibilities require driving a personal vehicle: possession of a current valid California Driver’s License and adherence to the Kern County Hospital Authority Vehicle Use and Driving Standard Policy (ENG-EC-119).
• If position responsibilities require driving a vehicle owned, leased or rented by Kern Medical: possession of a current valid California Driver’s license, a signed authorization for Release of Drivers Record Information and adherence to the Kern County Hospital Authority Vehicle Use and Driving Standard Policy (ENG-EC-119).

Nice To Haves

• Surgical Trauma experience preferred (for Level II).
• Incumbents designated as a Surgical Technician II at the time of the January 2017 job specification revision may be grandfathered without Surgical Technician Certification.

Responsibilities

• Handling required surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment while maintaining sterile technique for all surgical or invasive procedures.
• Assisting with transferring patients to the operating room table.
• Identifying patients and verifying surgeries with consent forms.
• Assisting with patient positioning, using appropriate equipment and anatomical principles.
• Gathering, checking, and opening supplies and equipment for procedures.
• Performing the surgical scrub and donning gown and gloves with sterile technique.
• Performing initial instrument, sharps, and sponge counts with the RN.
• Assisting with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.
• Participating in the surgical site and patient verification during the Time-Out Universal Protocol.
• Securing tubing, cords, and other sterile accessories.
• Assisting with surgical patient preparedness.
• Preparing and anticipating additional instrumentation, equipment, and supplies requirements.
• Labeling, measuring, and passing medications, hemostatic agents, and irrigation solutions.
• Holding retractors or instruments as directed by the surgical team.
• Sponging or suctioning the operative site as requested.
• Cutting suture material as directed by the surgical team.
• Coordinating the camera or changing robotic arms/instruments during endoscopic surgery.
• Maintaining the highest standard of sterile technique.
• Assisting with turnover cleaning of the surgical or procedural suite.
• Assisting in patient monitoring to ensure comfort and providing verbal and tactile reassurance.
• Assisting in maintaining normothermia.
• Assisting OR staff as needed within skill set.
• Keeping accurate records throughout the procedure.
• Helping transport the patient to the post anesthesia care unit.
• Demonstrating clinical knowledge and skill in the care of various patient populations (newborn, infant, toddler, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric).
• Performing other related duties within skill set when assigned.

Benefits

• New Hire Premium: +6% of base rate of pay, matched up to 6% if contributed to Deferred Compensation Plan.
• Shift Differential Pay: 10% of base pay for hours worked from 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM, with two (2) hour minimum.
