About The Position

Kern Medical is an acute care teaching center founded in 1867, offering advanced trauma care and a range of primary, specialty, and multi-specialty services. We care for a significant number of inpatients and clinic patients annually. This position is for a full-time Surgical Technologist.

Requirements

• High School Diploma/GED required
• Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technology Training Program
• Appointees not possessing the American Heart Association Responder or Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) card at time of hire must successfully complete appropriate training and qualify for the RQI Responder certification within 60 days of employment. As a continued condition of employment, employee must maintain RQI Responder certification and competency.
• Strong working knowledge of aseptic technique.
• Demonstrate the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly vigil for the maintenance of the sterile field.
• Maintain a high level of surgical conscience in professional behavior demonstrating understanding and application of principles of surgical technology and legal, ethical, and moral responsibilities to patients and team members.
• Surgical Technician Certification required through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. Incumbents designated as a Surgical Technician II at the time of the January 2017 job specification revision may be grandfathered without Surgical Technician Certification.

Responsibilities

• Handling of required surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment while maintaining sterile technique for all surgical or invasive procedures.
• Assisting with transferring patient to the operating room table.
• Identifying patient, verifying surgery to be performed with consent forms, and assisting in the transport of patient to procedural suite when requested.
• Assisting with positioning the patient, using appropriate equipment and anatomical principles to avoid patient injury.
• Gathering, checking and opening supplies and equipment needed for the surgical/invasive procedure.
• Performing the surgical scrub, and donning gown and gloves with sterile technique.
• Performing initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the RN according to Kern Medical policy and procedure.
• Assisting with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.
• Participating in the surgical site and patient verification during the Time-Out Universal Protocol.
• Securing tubing, cords and other sterile accessories.
• Assisting with surgical patient preparedness.
• Preparing and anticipating additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies requirements throughout the procedure.
• Labeling, measuring, passing medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the procedure.
• Holding retractors or instruments as directed by the surgical team.
• Sponging or suctioning the operative site as requested.
• Cutting suture material as directed by the surgical team.
• Coordinating the camera or changing out robotic arms/instruments during endoscopic surgery as directed by the surgical team.
• Maintaining the highest standard of sterile technique.
• Assisting other members of the team with turnover cleaning of the surgical or procedural suite.
• Assisting in patient monitoring to ensure the comfort of the patient and providing verbal and tactile reassurance to the patient (when applicable).
• Assisting in maintaining normothermia.
• Assisting OR staff as needed within skill set when requested.
• Keeping accurate records throughout the procedure.
• Helping transport the patient to the post anesthesia care unit.
• Demonstrating clinical knowledge and skill in the care of the newborn, infant, toddler, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient population.
• Performing other related duties within skill set when assigned.

• Shift Differential Pay: 10% of base pay for hours worked from 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM, with two (2) hour minimum.
