About The Position

The Surgical Technologist supports perioperative care by maintaining sterile fields, assisting surgical teams, and helping ensure safe and effective procedures. Under the supervision and guidance of a licensed physician or registered professional nurse, the technologist participates in delivering individualized perioperative nursing care and collaborates with other healthcare team members to provide quality patient care. The role serves patients of all ages and includes participation in unit educational activities.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Must qualify to practice as a Surgical Technologist under Commonwealth of Virginia requirements through an approved training or qualifying pathway.
Registration with the Commonwealth of Virginia required as applicable under state law.
Basic knowledge of instrumentation required.
Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care.
Must demonstrate knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan and the ability to interpret patient information to identify age-specific and individualized patient needs and provide care in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

Participate in delivering individualized perioperative registered nursing care under the supervision and guidance of a licensed physician or registered professional nurse.
Collaborate with other healthcare team members to assure quality patient care.
Establish and maintain a sterile field and ensure the team maintains a sterile environment.
Demonstrate correct and safe instrumentation passing.
Participate in surgical counts of sponges, needles, and instruments according to policy.
Adhere to policies and procedures, regulatory standards, and patient safety goals.
Participate in the nursing process for patients of all ages served.
Participate in unit educational activities.
