About The Position

The Surgical Technologist I facilitates the safe and efficient performance of surgical procedures. This is a Surgical Technologist Apprenticeship Program offering a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience across six leading hospital facilities, learning advanced surgical specialties from top professionals. Apprentices will gain advanced surgical technologist skills across multiple specialties, learn operating room protocols, instrumentation, and sterile techniques, gain real-world experience in high-acuity surgical environments, and collaborate professionally with surgeons, nurses, surgical technologists, and healthcare teams. A two (2) year commitment as a Full-Time employee with the Memorial Healthcare System is required.

• Accredited Program: Surgical Technologist (Required)
• BLS American Heart E-Card (BLS AHA ECARD) - American Heart Association (AMERICAN HEART)
• BLS American Heart E-Card (BLS AHA ECARD) - American Heart Association (AMERICAN HEART)
• BLS Cert American Heart_non ecard (BLS AHA) - American Heart Association (AMERICAN HEART)
• BLS Certification Grace (BLS GRACE) - Employee Grace Period for Essential Credential (GRACE)
• BLS Cert Red Cross (BLS RC) - Red Cross (RED CROSS)
• Requires critical thinking skills, effective communications skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
• No prior work experience required.

Nice To Haves

• Certified Surgical Technologist certification (CST or TS-C) is preferred.
• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program within the last 12 months preferred.
• Less than 6 months of surgical technologist work experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Handles, labels, and processes surgical specimens according to established protocols for safe and accurate delivery to the laboratory.
• Prepares the operating room by setting up sterile fields with drapes, solutions, instruments, equipment, and supplies tailored to each case.
• Anticipates the needs of the surgical team by passing instruments, supplies, and equipment efficiently during procedures while maintaining strict sterile technique.
• Collaborates with the sterile processing team to decontaminate, prepare, and sterilize surgical instruments and supplies.
• Contributes to a safe and supportive environment by adhering to infection prevention, patient safety, and quality standards.
• Verifies that surgical instruments and equipment are functioning properly and promptly reports or addresses any issues.
• Monitors and accounts for instruments, sponges, and supplies throughout each procedure to ensure patient safety.
• Assists nursing staff in direct patient care, including preparation, transport, positioning, and draping of patients for surgery.
