Applies principles of medical and surgical asepsis in the care of patients.

Requirements

  • One year certificate from college or technical school; or six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification preferred in surgical technology.

Responsibilities

  • Assembles equipment and supplies in the operating room and arranges instruments, according to instructions.
  • Maintains current instrument tray lists and physician preference cards.
  • Inspects, tests, and maintains surgical instrumentation and equipment to assure their safety and effectiveness.
  • Assists team members in placing and positioning patients on the table.
  • Scrubs arms, and hands, and dons gown, and gloves. Aids team in donning gowns and gloves.
  • Hands instruments and supplies to the surgeon holds retractors, cuts sutures, and performs other tasks as directed by the surgeon during operation.
  • Counts sponges, needles, and instruments before and after operation.
  • Assists in maintaining an adequate inventory of sterile items by returning items to the proper place and performing inventory of supplies.
  • Assists in maintaining an adequate inventory of linen for sterile processing.
  • Transports contaminated instruments from the OR to the decontamination room appropriately.
  • Prepares instruments and supplies for sterilization.
  • Takes part in cleaning instruments and supplies in wrapping them properly for sterilization.
  • Operates autoclaves, ultrasonic washers, sterilizers, and other equipment for processing items and checks indicators for proper functioning. Also performs biological monitoring techniques required on all sterilizers according to established policy and procedure.
  • Assists in daily preparation of rooms, room turnover, end-of-day cleaning duties, and monthly cleaning duties.
