About The Position

The Surgical Technician is responsible for receiving reports and room assignments, performing surgical hand scrubs, and preparing the operating room for procedures. This role involves ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are available, assisting the surgical team, anticipating the physician's needs, and maintaining a sterile environment. The technician also assists with patient transfer, instrument processing, terminal cleaning of the operating room, and restocking supplies for future cases. Preparation for the next day includes assembling equipment and supplies for upcoming procedures and checking/restocking supply areas.

Requirements

  • A graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Receives report and room assignment.
  • Performs surgical hand scrub according to procedure.
  • Damp dusts horizontal surfaces, including tables, equipment, and overhead spotlights, prior to the first scheduled procedure.
  • Prepares for procedure by checking the case cart, reading the physician's preference card, verifying equipment and supplies, opening supplies with assistance from the Circulating RN, scrubbing, gowning and gloving, setting up the back table and mayo, checking equipment functionality, and performing the initial count with the Circulating RN.
  • Assists the team into gowns and gloves during the procedure.
  • Assists the attending physician in draping the patient and sterile field.
  • Watches the progress of the procedure, anticipates physician's needs to prevent delay and maintain a safe environment.
  • Keeps the Circulating RN informed on specimens, changes in the procedure, presence of infection, etc.
  • Keeps used instruments free of blood and tissue by wiping with a wet sponge (using only sterile water). Ophthalmic instruments may be wiped using BSS.
  • Prepares for and performs closing counts according to procedure.
  • Applies sterile dressing; protects dressing with a sterile towel before cleaning the rest of the surgical site.
  • Removes any remaining instruments from the operative/procedure field.
  • Rolls draping material into waste hamper at the foot of the procedure table; confines gross contamination to the immediate area.
  • Removes prep solution from the patient's skin around the incision site.
  • Assists with patient transfer to stretcher/bed.
  • Takes instruments to the soiled utility room for processing and assists with processing as indicated by schedule and assignment.
  • Places soiled linen, trash, and sharps in designated containers in the holding area.
  • Assists with terminal cleaning of the operating/procedure room.
  • Returns unused sterile supplies and equipment and extra furniture to proper storage areas.
  • Opens sterile supplies for the next case.
  • Checks the next day's assignment and assembles equipment and supplies needed for those cases.
  • Handles questions concerning special requests and routine needs.
  • Checks and restocks supply cabinet, drawers, and anesthesia machine in accordance with routine stock supply requirements.
