About The Position

Under the direction of the Patient Counselor Manager, this role ensures the efficient operations of the Patient Counselor department. Key responsibilities include maintaining inventory, delivering patient education, scheduling appointments, reviewing insurance coverage, obtaining consent, understanding diagnostic testing, making confirmation and wellness calls, receiving incoming calls, and managing interoffice communications.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 1-2 years of clinical medical experience.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of all patient information.
  • Ability to manage multiple job assignments under varying degrees of pressure (usually from deadlines).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to make informed, well thought-out decisions.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to benchmark workplace civility and promote a positive work environment.
  • Strong computer competency, including the ability to learn new programs quickly.

Nice To Haves

  • Ophthalmology experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain daily inventory of brochures, surgical folders, copies of consents, and surgical packets.
  • Proactively identify the next patient to be seen from the Room Manager in NexTech.
  • Effectively communicate surgical options tailored to patient needs for cataract patients.
  • Provide appointments that accommodate the patient and follow scheduling protocol.
  • Assist patients in understanding their insurance coverage, out-of-pocket costs, and explore solutions.
  • Assist patients with consenting for elective procedures, reviewing options, risks, benefits, and alternatives.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of diagnostic testing for effective communication.
  • Make confirmation calls one week prior to surgery, including arrival time, location, medication start dates, application and compliance, consent options, and post-operative appointment details.
  • Make wellness calls the day of surgery to follow up after the procedure, addressing common symptoms, reviewing medication application, and reminding of post-operative appointments and aftercare importance.
  • Review and prioritize calls/voicemails each morning and afternoon to address urgent issues.
  • Return urgent calls/voicemails within preferably 90 minutes and no later than four hours.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Patient Counselor Manager.
