About The Position

The Surgical Associate Fulltime Days position at Texas Health Southwest involves supporting surgical operations by completing stocking duties, assisting with patient movement and positioning, and maintaining a clean and organized operating room environment. This role requires adherence to safety procedures, patient identification requirements, and maintaining patient dignity and confidentiality. The associate will also assist with room cleanup, hazardous waste disposal, and transporting instruments. They will act as a team member, following directions from the circulating nurse and responding promptly to requests.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Previous Patient Care Experience Preferred
  • BCLS - Basic Cardiac Life Support prior to providing independent patient care and maintained quarterly
  • Read, write and speak English
  • Able to stand/walk for majority of hours of their work shift
  • Easily move heavy equipment & supplies (up to 250 lbs on wheels) without endangering themselves or others.

Responsibilities

  • Completes routine stocking chores: Restocks warmer with blankets and saline, changes sharps containers, stocks linen, bags for trash and linen, red bags, Expose II, ensures two arm boards and safety strap are available, stocks and replaces suction liners, stocks sterile towels in cores, stocks masks and OR room gels and sanitizers, and empties soiled linen carts to linen chute.
  • Assists in moving patients to and from the operating room suites, following patient identification requirements, maintaining patient dignity and confidentiality, communicating appropriately with patients and families, observing safety procedures, and helping with patient positioning.
  • Demonstrates basic understanding of asepsis, decontaminates beds and stretchers between uses, and makes up beds and stretchers.
  • Assists in room cleanup before and/or after surgery, disposes of hazardous waste appropriately, uses personal protective gear as required, follows procedures for cleaning operating rooms and equipment, transports instruments to decontamination areas, puts equipment and supplies away, and restocks items.
  • Follows directions of the circulating nurse in obtaining equipment, instruments, and supplies as requested.
  • Answers call from Surgery Control Desk without delay.
  • Acts as a team member.
