About The Position

This is a Seasonal Paid Intern position at Oral Surgery Hawaii in Hilo, HI. The intern will assist the surgeon during consultations and treatment, perform basic lab duties, and ensure proper instrument cleaning and sterilization. Responsibilities also include setting up surgical trays, identifying instruments, preparing and breaking down rooms for anesthesia and surgery, seating patients, reviewing charts, and setting up nitrous oxide. The role requires supporting the airway for sedated patients, circulating to retrieve instruments, and providing excellent patient care and communication. Non-surgical duties include restocking supplies, taking vital signs, understanding procedure-based forms and consent forms, complying with OSHA requirements, performing administrative tasks like scheduling and charting, making follow-up calls, and greeting patients.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification required or willing to obtain.
  • Great organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to provide excellent patient care, even under stressful circumstances.
  • Consistent professionalism in appearance and attitude.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Surgeon during consultations and treatment.
  • Perform basic lab duties (Impressions, pouring up/trimming models).
  • Proper instrument cleaning in accordance with infection control and biohazard protocols.
  • Autoclave operation and function.
  • Surgical tray set-up.
  • Identification of instruments used in the clinic.
  • Room set up/break down for IV anesthesia and surgery.
  • Seat patient and perform pre-op set-up.
  • Review charts.
  • Nitrous oxide set-up.
  • Properly positioning restraints.
  • Support airway for sedated patients.
  • Circulate and retrieve instruments.
  • Provide excellent patient care & communication.
  • Restock supplies, forms, handouts, and rooms.
  • Take vital signs.
  • Familiar with all forms and handouts (procedure-based, consent forms, etc.).
  • Be aware of and in compliance with OSHA requirements (e.g. personal protection).
  • Perform administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, filing, and charting.
  • Make follow up phone calls to patients.
  • Greet patients and make them feel comfortable.
