Surgical Assistant I (Intern)
About The Position
This is a paid internship position at Oral Surgery Hawaii in Hilo, HI. The intern will assist the surgeon during consultations and treatment, perform basic lab duties, and ensure proper instrument cleaning and sterilization. Responsibilities also include room setup and breakdown, patient preparation, and supporting airway management for sedated patients. Additionally, the intern will handle non-surgical tasks such as restocking supplies, taking vital signs, administrative duties like scheduling and charting, and patient communication. The role requires adherence to OSHA requirements and excellent patient care.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current CPR/BLS certification required or willing to obtain.
- Great organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to provide excellent patient care, even under stressful circumstances.
- Consistent professionalism in appearance and attitude.
Responsibilities
- Assist Surgeon during consultations and treatment.
- Perform basic lab duties (Impressions, pouring up/trimming models).
- Proper instrument cleaning in accordance with infection control and biohazard protocols.
- Autoclave operation and function.
- Surgical tray set-up.
- Identification of instruments used in the clinic.
- Room set up/break down for IV anesthesia and surgery.
- Seat patient and perform pre-op set-up.
- Review charts.
- Nitrous oxide set-up.
- Properly positioning restraints.
- Support airway for sedated patients.
- Ability to circulate and retrieve instruments.
- Excellent patient care & communication.
- Restock supplies, forms, handouts, and rooms.
- Take vital signs.
- Familiar with all forms and handouts (procedure-based, consent forms, etc.).
- Aware of and in compliance with OSHA requirements (e.g. personal protection).
- Perform administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, filing, and charting.
- Make follow up phone calls to patients.
- Greet patients and make them feel comfortable.
