About The Position

St. Joseph's Health (SJH) is a leader in cardiac care, performing over 1000 open heart procedures annually and pioneering robotic and minimally invasive surgeries. SJH is the only hospital in Central New York offering transcatheter aortic valve replacement for high-risk patients with aortic stenosis. Two of their surgeons are certified robotic cardiac surgery proctors. The Surgical Technologist Assistant internship program aims to increase the number of Surgical Technologists by recruiting students before graduation. This internship will expose students to real-time patient care in perioperative and intraoperative roles, starting with hospital prerequisites and then moving to departmental roles. The program offers flexibility around the Surgical Technology Program schedule and may include variable shifts, including weekends.

Requirements

  • Be a current Surgical Technology student in good standing and making progress toward completion of program (> 10 months/prerequisites complete per program director).
  • Application to St. Joseph’s Health.
  • Letter of recommendation from the Surgical Technology program director, clinical instructor, or the St. Joseph’s Health OR Department Educator stating good standing in an accredited program.
  • Satisfactory program attendance must be maintained.
  • CPR/BLS certification.
  • Certification eligible as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).
  • Must eventually maintain CST certification.

Nice To Haves

  • As more time is accrued, the Surgical Technologist Assistant intern will preferably only first scrub cases equivalent to their classroom clinical experience level.
  • Cases that the student participates in, are not to be used in place of program requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provides technical and clinical support to the perioperative team during surgical procedures.
  • Handles instrumentation, supplies, and equipment as the primary scrub person.
  • Anticipates surgeon and procedural needs.
  • Works with Patient Support Technicians on room turnovers, terminal cleaning, patient transport, and running for blood.
  • Learns decontamination, scope processing, tray organization, wrapping, sterilization, and proper care/handling of sterile items in Central Sterile.
  • Learns the layout of CDS and the cardex system for locating sterile items.
  • Learns to pick cases using the CDS system and pick instruments and alternative supplies for case carts.
  • Assists as a second scrub, holding hearts, retractors, cameras, etc., under direct supervision of a CST.
  • Learns room setup, operation of OR patient tables, neptunes, room lights, and communication systems.
  • Checks cases prior to opening using experience from central sterile/case picking.
  • Observes the flow and purpose of opening an OR for a surgical procedure.
  • Opens sterile CDS packs, sterile instrument trays, and peel pack items under direct supervision.
  • Learns to balance classroom theory with real-world practice.
  • Performs surgical scrub, gown, and glove.
  • Performs basic setup skills including draping mayo, organizing the back table, checking tray sterility, and performing sponge counts.
  • Demonstrates the ability to receive fluids and medications from the circulator RN per hospital policy.
  • Performs in the second scrub position.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of cases and instruments.
  • First-scrubs basic laparoscopic cases with direct supervision.
  • Upon completion of the internship and hire as a Surgical Technologist, complies with the Surgical Technologist role in the Operating Room.

Benefits

  • Pay Rate: $18.00
  • Pay is based on experience, skills, and education.
  • Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates.
  • The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
