About The Position
This is an intern position within the Family Birthing Center, focusing on surgical support. The role involves assisting licensed RNs or Certified Surgical Technicians in maintaining a sterile environment, preparing for and assisting during surgical procedures, and ensuring the smooth operation of the surgical suite. Responsibilities include managing instruments and supplies, observing patient status, assisting with patient preparation and post-operative care, and maintaining confidentiality and safety protocols.
Requirements
- Basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology
- BLS within 60 days of hire and maintained
- Meets legal requirement for grandfathered training clause
Responsibilities
- Scrubs, gowns, and gloves
- Maintains sterile environment at all times during set up and procedure.
- Sets up table, instruments, and supplies according to scheduled operation.
- Assists with the preparation and draping of patient.
- Assists and anticipates the needs of the Surgeon and use of instrumentation, sutures, sponges, and supplies.
- Observes patient for changes in physical status and assists with emergency procedures as needed.
- Performs correct sponge, needle and instrument count with circulating RN according to unit policy.
- Assists the circulating RN in care and labeling of surgical specimens.
- Assists in the application of dressings and casts.
- Assists with cleaning surgical suite after each case.
- Responsible for cleaning equipment and restocking LDRP rooms post vaginal deliveries.
- Knowledge/safe use of medications on the surgical field.
- Obtains all supplies needed by the patient, surgeon or anesthesiologist.
- Obtains special equipment when needed.
- Maintains correct positioning of patient during case.
- Assists with moving patients from surgical table as needed.
- Maintains hospital and patient confidentiality.
- Knowledge of and adherence to OSHAS Safety Policies and Universal Precautions.
- Effective response in emergency surgical situations.
- Maintains effective working relationships.
- Ability to adapt to change rapidly. Flexibility in staffing/ emergency standby to meet patient needs.
- Performs other duties as assigned
