About The Position

Under the direction and supervision of a licensed RN or Certified Surgical Technician, the Surgery Technician Intern will scrub, gown, and glove, maintaining a sterile environment at all times during setup and procedure. This role involves setting up tables, instruments, and supplies according to the scheduled operation, and assisting with patient preparation and draping. The intern will anticipate and assist with the needs of the surgeon, including the use of instrumentation, sutures, sponges, and supplies. Responsibilities also include observing patient status, assisting with emergency procedures, performing correct counts of sponges, needles, and instruments, and assisting the circulating RN with specimen care and labeling. Additionally, the intern will assist in applying dressings and casts, cleaning the surgical suite, and ensuring the safe use of medications on the surgical field. This role requires obtaining all necessary supplies and special equipment, maintaining correct patient positioning, and assisting with patient movement. Maintaining hospital and patient confidentiality, adhering to safety policies and universal precautions, and responding effectively in emergency situations are crucial. The position also requires maintaining effective working relationships, adapting to change, and providing flexibility in staffing for patient needs.

Requirements

Basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology
BLS within 60 days of hire and maintained.
Meets legal requirement for grandfathered training clause.
Medium to heavy physical demands.
Knowledge of and efficiently operates all equipment used.
Ability to stand within limited area most of the working shift.
Ability to stoop frequently; push/pull up to 1200 pounds frequently, lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
Possess excellent eye/hand coordination
Ability to work under stress and constant time demands.
Ability to work within a controlled traffic pattern.
Able to provide quality care in an emergency basis to ensure quality patient care.

Responsibilities

Scrubs, gowns, and gloves
Maintains sterile environment at all times during set up and procedure.
Sets up table, instruments, and supplies according to scheduled operation.
Assists with the preparation and draping of patient.
Assists and anticipates the needs of the Surgeon and use of instrumentation, sutures, sponges, and supplies.
Observes patient for changes in physical status and assists with emergency procedures as needed.
Performs correct sponge, needle and instrument count with circulating RN according to unit policy.
Assists the circulating RN in care and labeling of surgical specimens.
Assists in the application of dressings and casts.
Assists with cleaning surgical suite after each case.
Knowledge/safe use of medications on the surgical field.
Obtains all supplies needed by the patient, surgeon or anesthesiologist.
Obtains special equipment when needed.
Maintains correct positioning of patient during case.
Assists with moving patients from surgical table as needed.
Maintains hospital and patient confidentiality.
Knowledge of and adherence to OSHAS Safety Policies and Universal Precautions.
Effective response in emergency surgical situations.
Maintains effective working relationships.
Ability to adapt to change rapidly.
Flexibility in staffing/ emergency standby to meet patient needs.
Performs other duties as assigned.
