About The Position

Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada (VOA-NCNN), a Certified Great Place to Work, is recruiting for a full-time Support Staff, Swing Shift Position, 2:00 PM to 10:30 PM for their Meadowview Navigation Center. This center provides safety to women experiencing homelessness in Sacramento, offering a space for up to 100 women to find shelter, heal from trauma, and access resources. VOA-NCNN is a ministry of service with nearly 600 employees dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives and reach their full potential. Founded in 1911, VOA-NCNN is one of the largest providers of social services in the region, operating over 40 programs including housing, employment services, and substance abuse and recovery services.

  • Specific knowledge and experience with the Twelve Step philosophy, mental illness, addiction and recovery, and dysfunctional family dynamics are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily work requirements to achieve established objectives of the program, including engaging guests, sharing information, and problem-solving using a trauma-informed, strength-based approach.
  • Explain program requirements and regulations to new guests and ensure compliance, continually reorienting guests to rules, rights, and responsibilities.
  • Coordinate meal preparation/service, room assignments, and other daily routines.
  • Provide "awake" shift coverage and maintain grounds security and safety at all times, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Provide emergency assistance to guests and co-workers as necessary.
  • Perform housekeeping and other maintenance tasks as needed, such as changing light bulbs, plunging toilets, and cleaning up accidents/messes.
  • Prepare for new guests, including sanitizing beds and sleeping areas.
  • Clean and sanitize all common areas, including restroom, laundry areas, and staff areas, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Ensure toiletry and cleaning supplies are stocked and secured.
  • Address behavior issues that create disharmony, criminal, or otherwise non-productive behavior, using de-escalation techniques as needed.
  • Take pertinent guest issues to the Case Management team.
  • Act as a positive role model, demonstrating professional behavior, appearance, and communication.
  • Complete all shift logs, observation logs, and incident reports.
  • Document and notify management of guest concerns, potential workflow problems, and/or any exceptions to policy that can affect program security or safety.
  • Adhere to staffing schedules to provide adequate/safe staffing coverage and accomplish program objectives.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of fire, safety, and health standards to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Verify the identity of individuals entering or exiting the premises and maintain accurate records of client entries and departures.
  • Use handheld metal detectors (wanding) to ensure no weapons are brought onto the premises, following strict protocols for handling suspicious items or individuals.
  • Conduct thorough searches of bags and personal belongings, ensuring prohibited items are not brought in.
  • Identify and store items prohibited in the shelter.
  • Operate security cameras and monitor activity to ensure the safety of shelter guests and staff, reporting and responding to any signs of breaches or misconduct.
  • Coordinate with staff to ensure swift response to medical situations and facilitate clear communication between involved parties.
  • Assist in de-escalating verbal or physical altercations to maintain the safety of all community members.
  • Contact emergency personnel (EMS, Fire, law enforcement) when necessary and document incidents and actions taken during emergencies.
  • Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
