About The Position

Join Our Team as Shelter Staff and Make a Difference Are you passionate about supporting vulnerable populations and creating a safe, supportive environment for those in need? Our organization is looking for compassionate, motivated individuals to join our Shelter Staff team. In this vital role, you'll be at the heart of shelter operations, helping to maintain a secure and welcoming space for both clients and volunteers. As Shelter Staff, your main responsibility is ensuring the safety and well-being of the shelter's residents. You will utilize your skills in crisis intervention, trauma-informed care, and de-escalation techniques to assist clients through their challenges, working closely with them to resolve conflicts and navigate their day-to-day lives in the shelter. Ongoing professional development and training will be provided to support your growth in these areas. In addition to client interaction, you'll help manage daily shelter operations, including cleaning, organizing, and meal setups. Strong communication is key, as you will report observations and incidents to the shelter leadership team to ensure proper follow-up. By creating a calm, structured environment, you'll be making a lasting impact on the lives of the individuals we serve.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, or a related field, and at least one year of experience working with the homeless population; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
  • Ability to provide compassion and empathy to individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness, physical disability, substance use, or low-income challenges.
  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize motivational interviewing techniques and harm reduction, trauma-informed care, and de-escalation principles.
  • Ability to remain fully alert during shifts and respond effectively to crises.
  • Physical ability to complete cleaning, organization, and supply management tasks.
  • Possession of a current Food Handler’s Certification or Permit.
  • Understanding and commitment to The Sophia Way’s Mission, vision, values, programs, and ability to embody a community-oriented spirit.
  • Experience with and ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Recent negative TB test, current CPR/AED/First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Food Worker training certifications, or ability to obtain upon hire.
