About The Position

Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada (VOA-NCNN) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives. As a Certified Great Place to Work, VOA-NCNN is recruiting for an Overnight Shift Support Staff position at the X Street Navigation Center. This 100-bed shelter, in partnership with the City of Sacramento, provides a safe haven for adults experiencing homelessness, offering case management and housing assistance with the ultimate goal of transitioning guests into independent living. The Overnight Shift runs from 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM, with days off on Tuesday and Wednesday, and requires weekend work.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and comprehend oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to provide services to clients without ethnic or social prejudices.
  • General knowledge of issues and challenges unique to homelessness, substance abuse, young adults, minorities, and people with disabilities.
  • Ability to utilize a range of interventions to work with clients with varying needs and levels of functioning.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours.
  • Willingness to function as a team member.
  • Computer skills required.
  • CPR and First Aid training within ninety (90) days of employment.
  • T.B. testing annually.
  • Teamwork skills.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to de-escalate crisis situations and assist residents and staff in emergency situations.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Analytical and decision-making ability.
  • Lift and move up to 40 pounds.
  • Physically able to safely maneuver weight distribution of a guest in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to climb stairs regularly.
  • Stand, walk, bend, stoop, sit frequently, and kneel occasionally.

Responsibilities

  • Explain program rules and regulations to residents and facilitate residents’ observance of the rules.
  • Coordinate meal preparation/service, bed/sleeping assignments, showers, laundering, and other daily routines.
  • Provide “awake” shift coverage and maintain ground security at all times, conducting hourly safety and security checks.
  • De-escalate crisis situations and respond appropriately, providing emergency assistance as necessary.
  • Maintain daily reports for statistical information.
  • Respond to client questions and concerns.
  • Perform clerical duties such as answering the telephone, recording messages, and filing.
  • Maintain clear and thorough communication with all residents.
  • Support Volunteers of America Staff in implementing plans to assist residents in successful program completion.
  • Role model positive behavior to help clients work towards self-sufficiency.
  • Document and report client concerns and/or infractions that impact program security and safety.
  • Notify management of potential workflow problems and resource needs.
  • Adhere to staffing schedules to ensure adequate and safe staffing coverage.
  • Communicate with staff, service providers, and external program representatives.
  • Direct available resources as required.
  • Adhere to ethical standards, program philosophy guidelines, and confidentiality laws.
  • Maintain working knowledge of fire, safety, and health standards.
  • Verify the identity of individuals entering or exiting the premises and maintain accurate records of client entries and departures.
  • Use handheld metal detectors (wanding) to ensure no weapons are brought onto the premises.
  • Follow strict protocols for handling suspicious items or individuals.
  • Conduct thorough searches of bags and personal belongings.
  • Ensure prohibited items, such as drugs or paraphernalia, are not brought in.
  • Identify and store items prohibited in the shelter.
  • Operate security cameras and monitor activity to ensure the safety of shelter guests and staff.
  • Report and respond to any signs of breaches or misconduct.
  • Coordinate with staff to ensure swift response to medical situations.
  • Facilitate clear and efficient communication between involved parties during medical emergencies.
  • Assist in de-escalating verbal or physical altercations.
  • Use de-escalation skills to diffuse tense situations without compromising security.
  • Contact emergency personnel (EMS, Fire, law enforcement) when necessary.
  • Document incidents and actions taken during emergencies, logging first responder information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
