About The Position

Under general supervision, the Support Services Clerk I performs a variety of clerical and administrative duties in support of the Public Safety Department. This role provides customer service and performs other related duties as assigned. The number of hours worked will be determined by the needs of the department, with incumbents working a maximum of 28 hours per week and expected to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. This is an at-will position.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school (or G.E.D equivalent).
  • Two years of experience performing general clerical duties.
  • Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles and a good driving record.
  • Knowledge of modern information processing practices and procedures, including business correspondence, filing, and standard office equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of use of personal computers using Windows-based software for word processing and other tasks.
  • Knowledge of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of telephone and receptionist techniques.
  • Knowledge of principles of customer service.
  • Ability to perform clerical and administrative work involving the use of independent judgment.
  • Ability to learn to effectively use the city's computer programs to enter and retrieve information.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer using Windows-based software.
  • Ability to tactfully and courteously respond to routine questions in person and over the telephone.
  • Ability to promote the City's policy of providing outstanding customer service.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to see and hear within normal ranges.
  • Dexterity to read, write, type, operate office equipment such as a computer, telephone, calculator, copier, fax machine, pencils, pens, scissors, stapler.
  • Ability to communicate orally, in writing, and over the telephone.
  • Ability to understand written and verbal directions.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time.
  • All new employees must verify their identity and entitlement to work in the United States by providing required documentation.
  • All City employees are required to sign a loyalty oath or affirmation prior to actual employment.
  • All City employees are required to perform assigned Emergency Service duties in the event of an emergency or disaster.

Responsibilities

  • Uses the city's computer programs to enter and retrieve information and maintain and update database records.
  • Uses a personal computer to prepare a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, and other materials.
  • Provides information regarding City and department programs and services as well as referrals to appropriate city, county, or other agencies, in person or over the telephone.
  • Records and files a variety of information.
  • Operates a variety of office machines and equipment.
  • May assist with the preparation of weekly and monthly reports.
  • May be required to drive the Public Safety Resource Command Vehicle or other vehicles.
  • May assist with providing support services to deputies and other personnel.
  • Assists with planning and organizing events for crossing guards (Field Division).
  • Maintains inventory and distribution of uniforms and equipment (Field Division).
  • Assists with completing and processing timecards (Field Division).
  • Performs special detail tasks for crossing guards and community safety officers (Field Division).
  • Performs data tracking and entry related to radar trailers, traffic safety service requests, and Award of Valor nominations (Field Division).
  • Participates in community relations (Program and Event Division).
  • Researches relevant crime prevention and emergency preparedness topics (Program and Event Division).
  • Compiles monthly crime data and writes monthly public education articles (Program and Event Division).
  • Assists in planning, coordinating, and facilitating special events and programs (Program and Event Division).
  • Participates in community outreach for schools, residents, Lakewood businesses, and seniors (Program and Event Division).
