About The Position

Serves as a Supervisory Aerospace Engineer for the US Army Aviation and Missile Command, Aviation Integration Directorate, located in Fort Eustis, VA. This is a pay banded position. The NH-04 band encompasses grades 14 and 15 under the General Schedule (GS) system. Duties include leading and supervising the Aviation Integration Directorate engineering and airworthiness efforts for supported classified and unclassified aviation-centric acquisition programs and projects. This role requires applying technical expertise in airworthiness of fixed wing, rotary wing and unmanned systems, providing engineering oversight and management to ensure aircraft and sub-systems meet flight safety and comply with Army and Federal regulations. The position involves forecasting, coordinating, and managing the budget for internal and external engineering and subject matter expert support for multiple Safety of Flight Review Boards supporting airworthiness. It also includes managing engineering support to multiple program offices developing unique aviation weapons systems and supporting sub-systems, supervising and managing engineering subject matter experts in support of multiple customers to develop and safely integrate capabilities on fixed wing, rotary wing and unmanned aircraft. The role leads and manages the organization’s system engineering efforts, engineering professional development, and engineering talent management in order to deliver aviation weapon system capability. Overseeing the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes for assigned area of responsibility, managing the development, modification, fabrication, integration, and installation of prototype unique aircraft systems and supporting sub-systems, and assisting program offices, engineers, budget office, and logistic specialists in the development of weapons system costs are also key duties. Executing and leading test planning and testing of prototype aircraft systems, and leading and managing engineering professional recruiting, development, motivation, and retention are also part of this role.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.

  • This is an Army Acquisition, Logistics and Technology Workforce position. Selectee must meet position requirements for (Practitioner) level, Contracting certification within 60 months as of entrance on duty.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter.
  • One-year supervisory probationary period may be required.
  • This position is designated as a Critical Acquisition Position.
  • The incumbent will be required to sign a 3 year tenure agreement.

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade/level (NH-03).
  • Specialized experience is defined as: 1) Testing the airworthiness of mission systems on rotary wing, fixed wing and/or unmanned aircraft, 2) Assessing the safety of weapon systems, including hazard analysis and risk mitigation, 3) Solving aviation problems using system engineering and program management methods and, 4) Leading a team in the accomplishment of organizational goals.
  • Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
  • Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.
  • Professional registration or licensure -- Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.
  • Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
  • Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an engineering program as described in paragraph A.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
