About The Position

This role oversees the day-to-day operations of the department, ensuring quality and compliance of all policies, procedures, and regulatory agencies. The position involves communicating with and facilitating conflict resolution with employees, physicians, patients/residents/families, and other healthcare team members. It also includes developing and adjusting employee schedules, collaborating on employee performance feedback, and assisting in the training and development of staff. The supervisor provides oversight for social workers, the care management department, and social work students. They understand critical components for achieving results and can assist in interviewing, hiring, orienting, counseling, educating, disciplining, and terminating staff when necessary. The role also assists in the escalation of discharge planning or social needs of patients/residents and helps during short staffing or ill calls. It promotes positive collaboration and converts difficult interactions into productive ones. The supervisor provides leadership for the delivery of medical Social Services, expertise, and consultation, acting as a liaison at local, regional, and state levels, promoting equal access throughout the Health System. They demonstrate knowledge of quality management methods and support an environment that meets organizational quality goals. Maintaining current certifications and continuing education is essential. The role may involve serving on or chairing departmental/organization committees and task forces, and assisting with other projects as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work from an accredited program required.
  • In Minnesota, must follow Minnesota State statute regarding social worker education.
  • Minimum of two-five years of hospital or healthcare social work experience.
  • Must possess a license in good standing in state(s) of practice: In Iowa, must have one of the following: Licensed Bachelor Social Worker (LBSW) Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW)
  • In Minnesota, must have one of the following: Licensed Social Worker (LSW) Licensed Graduated Social Worker (LGSW) Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) OR other allowed credential based on Minnesota statute
  • In North Dakota, must have one of the following: Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker (LBSW) Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
  • In South Dakota, must have one of the following: Social Worker license (SW) Certified Social Worker (CSW) Certified Social Worker - Private Independent Practice (CSW-PIP)
  • GSS locations: Licensure or certification required by the state social work licensing board.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in social work or related field preferred.
  • Supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
  • Depending on position, may be required to possess multi-state licensure privilege.

Responsibilities

  • Communicates with and facilitates conflict resolution with employees, physicians, patients/residents/families and other healthcare team members.
  • Develops, adjusts and distributes employee schedules.
  • Collaborates and provides feedback in measuring employee performance.
  • Assists in the training of new staff members and the development of existing staff members, i.e., mentoring, providing education and providing support.
  • Provides supervision, feedback and support to social workers and the care management department.
  • Provides oversight for social work students.
  • Assists in the escalation of discharge planning or social needs of patients/residents.
  • Assists during short staffing or ill calls.
  • Practices positive collaboration and converts difficult interactions into productive ones.
  • Provides leadership for the delivery of medical Social Services, expertise and/or consultation and acts as a liaison by representing at the local, regional and state levels.
  • Promotes equal access to all throughout the Health System.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of quality management methods, tools, and techniques and ability to create and support an environment that meets the quality goals of the organization.
  • Maintains current certifications in specialty and continues education when necessary.
  • Serves and/or chairs departmental/organization committees and task forces as needed.
  • May be asked to assist with other projects or work assignments as needed by organization, department or leadership.
