What will you be doing in this role? The Supervisor, Phlebotomy is responsible for the daily planning, coordination, and oversight of phlebotomy services to ensure high-quality, timely, and patient-centered specimen collection. Under the direction of the Associate Director, the Supervisor oversees workflow, staffing, productivity, quality, and operational performance across assigned phlebotomy areas. The Supervisor provides direct supervision of staff, ensures compliance with Medical Center policies and regulatory standards, and supports continuous process improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Phlebotomy Certificate that meets the mandates of the laws and regulations of the State of California.
  • Five (5) years of Phlebotomy and Pre-analytical clinical lab experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in health sciences, laboratory sciences, healthcare administration or a related field, preferred.
  • One (1) year in a leadership role in pre-analytical lab process including supervision of staff, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees daily phlebotomy operations, ensuring efficient workflow, appropriate staffing coverage, and timely specimen collection to support patient care and turnaround time expectations; including STAT TAT, patient wait times, and rounding activities.
  • Supervises staff, including responsibility for hiring, onboarding, assigning work, coaching, performance management, competency assessment, corrective action, and employee development.
  • Collaborates with laboratory leadership, nursing units, and ancillary departments to resolve operational issues and improve service coordination.
  • Monitors productivity, workload distribution, and operational metrics; and identifies performance gaps and implements corrective actions to improve efficiency and service delivery.
  • Participates in the development of business and/or operations plans.
  • Supports development, review, and implementation of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with Medical Center policies, laboratory procedures, safety standards, and regulatory/accreditation requirements.
  • Identifies operational challenges and participates in continuous quality improvement and process optimization initiatives.
  • Assists leadership with expense management, resource utilization, and supply oversight.
  • Participate in departmental readiness activities related to accreditation, licensure, and regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee employee timekeeping, scheduling, and staffing assignments using UKG and departmental systems.
  • Leads or supports special projects, including workflow improvements, materials evaluation, and process validations.
