About The Position
The Supervisor of Fleet Maintenance leads day-to-day shop activities to maximize fleet uptime, safety, and regulatory compliance. The role oversees work planning and scheduling, technician supervision, repair quality control, preventive maintenance execution, parts and cost discipline, and maintenance documentation. The Supervisor ensures refuse collection vehicles are maintained in accordance with OEM standards, company maintenance policies, and FMCSA/DOT requirements, and is the frontline leader responsible for delivering safe, reliable, and cost-effective fleet performance to Operations. Interstate Waste Services provides solid waste, recycling, and environmental services across the greater New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut markets, as well as operating a rail-served landfill in Ohio. Requirements
- At least 5 years of heavy-duty fleet maintenance experience.
- At least 2 years of supervisory or lead technician experience.
- Strong knowledge of refuse truck systems.
- Working knowledge of FMCSA/DOT maintenance requirements.
- Experience using computerized maintenance management systems.
- Strong leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
Responsibilities
- Enforce safety policies, PPE requirements, and shop safety standards; lead daily safety engagement, including toolbox talks, hazard identification, and shop walkthroughs.
- Ensure Lockout/Tagout, hot work, lifting, and confined-space practices are followed.
- Investigate safety incidents and near misses and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure compliance with FMCSA 49 CFR Part 396 maintenance requirements and ensure DVIR defects are documented, corrected, and closed in accordance with DOT standards.
- Maintain accurate, audit-ready maintenance documentation.
- Plan, assign, and prioritize daily work orders, including preventive maintenance, breakdowns, campaigns, and road calls.
- Manage work-in-process and shop utilization, balancing preventive maintenance compliance with reactive repair demands.
- Coordinate equipment downtime and return-to-service communications with Operations.
- Manage emergency repairs, seasonal readiness, severe-weather response, road-call dispatch, and vendor coordination as required.
- Verify repairs meet OEM and company standards and conduct release-to-service inspections.
- Reduce repeat repairs through root-cause problem solving; ensure preventive maintenance inspections are thorough and standardized; and drive improvements in fleet reliability and uptime.
- Supervise, coach, and develop technicians; conduct performance evaluations and provide timely coaching and discipline.
- Manage attendance, productivity, and adherence to shop standards; support apprenticeship and skill-development programs; and promote ownership, teamwork, and professional conduct.
- Maintain compliance with union agreements, if applicable.
- Maintain appropriate parts, tire, fluid, and consumable inventory; enforce cycle counts, core returns, and warranty recovery; and approve parts purchases within authorization limits.
- Monitor shop spending against budget and identify cost savings without compromising safety or quality.
- Ensure timely and accurate work-order documentation in the maintenance system, including labor hours, coding, and repair notes.
- Monitor and report shop KPIs and develop corrective action plans to address performance gaps.
