About The Position

Under general supervision, the Supervisor Mill supervises, coordinates, and controls the safe and efficient operation of an assigned work unit at Freeport-McMoRan’s Morenci operations, an open-pit copper mining complex near Safford, Arizona. The role may participate in daily operational work, including its most difficult tasks, and is responsible for planning and monitoring work, staffing, supplies, equipment, and safety practices. Morenci operations includes concentrators, leach systems, SX plants, and EW tank houses producing copper cathode. Work takes place in a mine or manufacturing plant setting and may involve exposure to challenging environmental and operational hazards. Employees required to work on-site may qualify for a monthly housing allowance, subject to program guidelines.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED and five years of related operational experience, including supervisory or lead experience; alternatively, a bachelor’s degree in a technical mining-related discipline and at least one summer internship or equivalent experience in a mining or industrial environment.
Additional certifications or licensure appropriate to the job may be required.
Knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques.
Skill in resolving day-to-day questions and problems concerning equipment, materials, methods, and procedures needed to complete projects.
Skill in budget preparation, monitoring, and administration.
Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Skill in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety instructions and procedures in English.
Ability to communicate in English about job assignments, procedures, and applicable safety standards.
Ability to work in a potentially stressful environment.
May be required to pass a medical exam and all required training and testing.
Must comply with mandatory pre-employment drug testing and ongoing testing as permitted by applicable law.

Responsibilities

Assign, supervise, and review the work of staff in the assigned work unit.
Implement production plans according to the approved schedule.
May perform daily operational duties, including the most difficult work.
Inspect and evaluate work in progress, identify problem areas, and direct remedial action when appropriate.
Conduct performance evaluations for subordinate staff.
Estimate staffing, materials, and equipment needs for projected work activities.
Maintain an inventory of parts and materials.
Approve purchases of materials and equipment.
Maintain reports on time, materials, and equipment use.
Requisition tools, supplies, materials, and equipment.
Train staff in safety procedures.
Maintain safety data sheets for crews.
Perform other duties as required.
