About The Position

The Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor leads and coordinates maintenance activities to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of powder manufacturing equipment and facility infrastructure. The role supervises maintenance technicians, manages preventive and predictive maintenance programs, supports capital projects, and drives continuous improvement to maximize equipment uptime and plant performance. The supervisor provides technical leadership in troubleshooting, repair, and root cause analysis of mechanical equipment failures; coordinates daily maintenance work and contractors; and works with Operations, Engineering, the Storeroom, and Purchasing to improve reliability and ensure resources and materials are available. The role also leads responses to significant breakdowns and communicates equipment status, risks, repair progress, and expected return-to-service timing to Operations and plant leadership. This position directly supervises Multi-Craft Maintenance Technicians and assigned maintenance personnel, including work assignment, coaching, training, performance management, employee development, attendance management, timekeeping, and safety accountability. The work is primarily in a plant environment, with regular exposure to production equipment, noise, temperature variations, fumes or airborne particles, and other industrial conditions. Required PPE must be worn.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Industrial Maintenance, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • At least 5 years of industrial maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • At least 2 years of supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience with CMMS systems.
  • Knowledge of industrial safety practices, including lockout/tagout, confined space, and hot work procedures.
  • Working knowledge of PLC-controlled equipment, VFDs, motors, instrumentation, and process controls sufficient to support troubleshooting and coordinate with E&I and electrical personnel.
  • Experience applying condition-based and predictive maintenance techniques, such as vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis, ultrasonic inspection, or other equipment condition-monitoring methods.
  • Ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance in accordance with established work schedules.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, dust, vibration, temperature variations, and moving mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to walk throughout the facility for extended periods and routinely access production and maintenance areas.
  • Ability to stand, sit, climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach as needed to inspect equipment and observe maintenance activities.
  • Ability to occasionally climb ladders and access elevated work areas while following safety requirements.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hats, steel-toed footwear, respirators, and other required equipment.
  • Ability to distinguish colors, read gauges, instrumentation, and maintenance documentation, and communicate effectively in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations and equipment issues throughout the facility, including during off-hours when required.
  • Ability to work safely around dust collection systems, compressed gases, furnaces, mixers, blenders, conveyors, and other industrial process equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in powder metallurgy, metal powders, chemical processing, thermal spray, atomization, mining, or other particulate manufacturing environments.
  • Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma experience.
  • Working knowledge of industrial fabrication, welding, rigging, piping, and mechanical installation practices.

Responsibilities

  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with OSHA and company safety requirements, including leading lockout/tagout compliance efforts.
  • Ensure maintenance activities comply with environmental and regulatory requirements; participate in incident investigations and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company standards.
  • Provide technical leadership in troubleshooting, repair, and root cause analysis of mechanical equipment failures.
  • Schedule and prioritize daily maintenance activities, review the work-order backlog, and establish maintenance priorities.
  • Coach, train, and provide performance feedback to maintenance personnel.
  • Ensure work orders contain accurate labor, parts, failure, and completion information.
  • Coordinate labor, parts, tools, permits, and equipment for planned maintenance.
  • Coordinate and oversee contractors performing maintenance, installation, fabrication, and repair, ensuring compliance with site safety requirements, scope, quality, and schedule expectations.
  • Monitor preventive maintenance compliance and overdue corrective maintenance.
  • Partner with Storeroom Personnel and Purchasing to identify critical spare parts, set stocking requirements, and ensure material availability for planned and emergency maintenance.
  • Develop maintenance schedules that minimize production disruptions.
  • Support Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives; identify maintenance and reliability cost-saving opportunities.
  • Identify recurring equipment failures and address them through root cause failure analysis rather than repeated component replacement.
  • Partner with Operations and Engineering to improve equipment reliability, maintainability, and lifecycle performance.
  • Support capital improvement and equipment upgrade projects.
  • Lead maintenance responses to significant equipment breakdowns, coordinating resources to restore equipment to service safely and efficiently.
  • Communicate equipment status, repair progress, risks, and estimated return-to-service timing to Operations and plant leadership.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot powder production systems, thermal processing equipment, mixers, blenders, classifiers, conveying and dust collection systems, screening and sieving equipment, compressors, pumps, vacuum systems, material handling equipment, industrial furnaces, and atomization equipment.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot bearings, gearboxes, power transmission systems, shafts, couplings, belt and chain drives, conveyors, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, fans, blowers, lubrication systems, piping, valves, and mechanical utilities.
  • Directly supervise Multi-Craft Maintenance Technicians and assigned personnel, including work assignment and prioritization, coaching, training, performance management, employee development, attendance management, timekeeping, and safety accountability.
  • Support hiring and disciplinary processes in partnership with Human Resources and the Maintenance Manager.
