About The Position

UPMC McKeesport is seeking an experienced Supervisor of Clinical Care and Discharge Planning to join our Addiction Medicine Unit. This role offers the opportunity to be part of a compassionate, multidisciplinary team dedicated to supporting individuals throughout their recovery journey. The Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the programmatic and regulatory functions of the Addiction Medicine Unit. Key responsibilities include managing insurance authorizations and continued stay reviews, as well as providing social work support as needed. This position also provides direct supervision to unit Social Workers and Milieu Therapists, ensuring high-quality patient care and compliance with applicable standards. Our 27-bed Addiction Medicine Unit specializes in the treatment of patients experiencing withdrawal from alcohol, opioids, and benzodiazepines. In addition, we offer hospital-based rehabilitation services for individuals in early recovery from substances such as cocaine, methamphetamines, and barbiturates. Requirements

  • BSN or MSW/master's degree in another health and human services field that promotes the physical, psychosocial, and/or vocational well-being of those being served required.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in discharge planning, care coordination, or similar experience managing departmental operations required.
  • Expertise in care management, discharge planning and utilization review processes.
  • Ability to build credible and effective relationships with physician and executive leadership.
  • Understanding of clinical, financial, and regulatory processes.
  • Ability to prepare and critically analyze data, make appropriate recommendations toward resolution, and follow-through of identified action.
  • Expertise in interpersonal relationships, organizational relations.
  • Effective communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • Strong quality improvement expertise.
  • Knowledge of health care revenue cycle processes and requirements.
  • RN, LSW/LCSW, or education-appropriate license required.
  • CCM/ACM, LCSW or UPMC approved certification required.
  • BLS due within 30 days of hire.
  • CCMC due within 60 days of hire.

  • Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with the Director to ensure effective processes and systems are established and maintained to meet departmental goals.
  • Oversees daily operations of the Discharge Planning staff under the direction of the Director. Ensures productivity standards are met.
  • Utilizes expert leadership and critical thinking skills to efficiently coordinate and direct discharge planning expectations among all health care providers while maximizing use of resources. Takes a leadership role in the mentoring and monitoring of department staff. Participates in leadership development.
  • Hires and terminates staff as necessary. Establishes and monitors performance and provides feedback and guidance to staff. Conducts annual performance evaluations.
  • Functions as a resource person for the care management and denial management processes. Develops and implements processes for timely and accurate documentation of appropriate data relating to concurrent denials. Assures regulatory compliance in determining denial of service and/or providing notices of non-coverage.
  • Ensure training programs address identified needs of department staff.
  • Maintains a tracking system for overseeing and monitoring progress toward established goals and objectives of the discharge planning program.
  • Collaborates with other UPMC departments to establish mechanisms to address issues related to discharge planning, tracks avoidable day/delay documentation, and reports trends/barriers to Director.
  • Participates in the development of the Clinical Care Coordination and Discharge Planning department annual budget and plans for department needs under the direction of and in collaboration with the Director. Monitors actual expenses against budget and reports variances.
