About The Position

The Superintendent of Transportation Maintenance oversees the daily operational activities of a highway maintenance yard. This role involves directing the activities of maintenance and repair, equipment operations, and office support work units. The position is performed in an office environment but requires presence at construction sites for daily checks of work crews' progress and to oversee field operations during weather emergencies, which may involve construction hazards, moving equipment, traffic, and inclement weather. The role requires minimal physical exertion.

Requirements

  • Graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.
  • Five years of experience in highway construction, maintenance, and repair work.
  • Two years of supervisory responsibilities including disciplining, evaluating performance, and recommending hiring, firing, and promoting others.
  • Valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management.
  • Must upload a copy of your valid driver's license with application at time of applying.

  • Knowledge of the surface, sub-surface, and base materials used in the repair of roads, streets, and highways.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of complex highway construction equipment.

  • Ability to inspect the work of others to ensure compliance with department standards and enforce safety regulations.
  • Ability to maintain records and write reports.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, profiles, and grade sheets.
