About The Position

The Métis Student Museum Interpreter at the Sault Ste. Marie Métis Heritage Centre will play a key role in sharing Métis culture, history, and stories with museum visitors through engaging and educational experiences. This opportunity is ideal for a motivated and organized student who is passionate about cultural interpretation and public engagement. The Interpreter will work closely with museum staff and community partners to deliver programs and tours that are accurate, respectful, and enriching. Opportunities to develop skills in cultural programming, public speaking, and heritage education may also be offered within the MNO.

Requirements

• Highschool (Grade 12)
• Less than 1 year of experience
• Demonstrated experience dealing with confidential and sensitive information
• Strong desire to act in the service of the Métis Citizens, to advance and uphold rights and share cultural knowledge
• High degree of technology literacy and proficiency in standard office equipment, zoom online platform, cellphone use and Microsoft office software
• Advanced written and verbal communications skills
• Superior organization skills and time/priority-management
• Ability to work alone/independently with minimal supervision
• Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain
• Completion and maintenance of Vulnerable Sector Verification

Responsibilities

• Activity planning will include using provided content, organize and coordinate a variety of museum-based and online educational activities, ensuring a well-rounded schedule for participants.
• Activity facilitation in delivering guided tours, programs, and workshops with enthusiasm, ensuring sessions are educational, engaging, and culturally accurate.
• Logistics management by preparing spaces, materials, and schedules for programs and events, ensuring smooth execution of all activities.
• Collaboration in working closely with SYP teams, MNO branch staff, community councils, and external partners to coordinate events and maximize available resources.
• Participant engagement by developing strategies to actively engage participants during tours, workshops, and programs, promoting a positive and inclusive environment.
• Communication in providing clear verbal and written communication to participants, staff, and volunteers regarding event schedules, expectations, and content. Assist in capturing video and photography for use by the MNO Communication Branch.
• Problem solving in responding to challenges or unexpected issues during programs, applying practical solutions to maintain seamless participant experiences.
• Provide reception and customer service coverage as required, including answering phones, greeting visitors, responding to general inquiries, and covering the front desk during scheduled breaks or absences to ensure continuous service.
• Documentation by maintaining accurate records of activities, participant feedback, and event details to inform future program planning.
• Compliance in ensuring adherence to MNO policies, procedures, and safety regulations during all activities, and participate in assigned internal and external training sessions.
• Promotes the values of the organization within the workplace and in the community by demonstrating positive and professional relationships with others (employees, citizens, council, volunteers, advocates, etc.).
• Reports all unsafe conditions, hazards or practices, accidents and incidents in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and adheres to all Health and Safety requirements within the MNO’s policies and procedures and provincial legislation.
• Performs other job/branch-related duties as required.
