About The Position

This position is for a Summer School Nurse within the Haverhill Public Schools. The role involves promoting and maintaining the physical and emotional health of students during the summer program, providing emergency care, managing health records, distributing medications, and assessing student health. Additional responsibilities are outlined for nurses working in special needs classrooms, including assisting with feeding tubes, monitoring seizures, developing healthcare plans, and accompanying students on off-site activities. The position is contingent on funding and student enrollment, with specific dates and hours varying by program and location.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two (2) years full time or equivalent part time paid experience as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse in a recognized public school or public health agency preferred.
  • Registration as a nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in nursing is required.
  • Licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, preferred.
  • Knowledge of present-day public health nursing practice including its underlying principles and techniques.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse in a recognized public school or public health agency.
  • Licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and maintain optimal physical and emotional health of students.
  • Provide emergency care and first aid in cases of injury and sudden illness.
  • Maintain health records and document pertinent information.
  • Review medical records for students attending the summer program.
  • Notify parents of illnesses and accidents, which occur during school hours and fill out appropriate accident forms.
  • Distribute medications as necessary.
  • Assess and evaluate the students’ health as necessary.
  • Assess pertinent family history and home situation factors.
  • Inform teachers and staff regarding medical issues that may affect them.
  • Counsel students, parents, and school personnel, and plan action for eliminating, minimizing, or accepting health problems.
  • Assist with hydration and nutrition via g-tube or j-tube by either mechanical pump or gravity feed (for Special Needs Classroom Nurses).
  • Monitor seizure activity and provide medications if indicated as per doctor’s order (for Special Needs Classroom Nurses).
  • Develop and update health care plans, meet with school team members and families to provide an appropriate level of health care within the school setting (for Special Needs Classroom Nurses).
  • Accompany students with medical needs when out of the school on field trips or community trips, therapeutic swimming pool, or horseback riding as per the IEP and Individual Health Care Plan (IHCP).
  • May be required to ride the school bus with student(s).
