About The Position

This position is for a Summer Student Research Assistant, also referred to as a Research Apprentice. The program focuses on assessing circadian rhythms and sleep homeostatic processes in children and adolescents. This involves lengthy in-lab sessions with assessments on non-24-hour days, requiring staff involvement around the clock. Apprentices will gain experience in various facets of data collection, data reduction, and data entry. The program includes a formal training component covering topics such as human sleep and circadian rhythms, neurophysiology, polysomnographic techniques, and ethical research conduct. Successful applicants will also develop presentation skills and learn how to prepare for scientific meetings.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate students with strong interest in behavioral sciences research
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for, commitment to, and availability for the full program
  • Reside in or near Providence for the summer
  • Able and willing to work on various types of schedules, including owl, lark, and neither shifts, which may involve overnight hours and weekends.
  • Successful applicants are required to apply for student membership ($45 Fee) in the Sleep Research Society.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous courses or lab work in sleep or circadian rhythms are helpful but not required.
  • Students from local institutions are asked to maintain participation in sleep lab activities beyond the summer by working on the lab's sleep studies during the school year.
  • Graduate students are accepted under special circumstances.
  • Students may apply for a repeat summer experience as a Senior Research Apprentice, with a slightly higher stipend.
