About The Position

The Santa Barbara News-Press is seeking bold, curious, and innovative early-career and student journalists for a paid summer internship. Interns will be core members of a team transforming the 157-year-old Santa Barbara News-Press into an innovative local news outlet. This role involves on-the-ground, community-driven reporting across Santa Barbara County, covering breaking news, government, business, culture, community, and enterprise. Interns will work with editors and journalists to meet deadlines, develop reporting skills, writing style, production abilities, and on-camera presence. They will have the opportunity to pitch stories, cover assigned stories, receive mentorship, editing, and collaborate on larger projects. Emphasis will be placed on cross-platform storytelling, including diverse written styles and short-form vertical video. The internship program may last up to 12 weeks, with a maximum of 20 hours per week, running from May to August.

Requirements

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Strong news writing and editing skills, with familiarity in Associated Press style
  • Understanding of basic journalism concepts including news judgment
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Proven professionalism, dependability, and punctuality
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy

Nice To Haves

  • Ideal candidates are in college, recent college graduates, or early career individuals of any kind, looking for experience.
  • Preference will be given to more advanced students and those with greater work experience.
  • Spanish fluency is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Cover community news and events that matter to local audiences
  • Write, shoot, and produce engaging video and photograph content
  • Produce at least one story a day, on deadline
  • Commit to accurate fact-based reporting, free of agenda and bias
  • Collaborate with others, and take direction from editors
  • Analyze public data and contribute to data-driven reporting
