About The Position

MISO is seeking PhD or graduate-level students pursuing degrees in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or related fields for a summer internship in 2027. This internship offers the opportunity to contribute to innovations that enhance system reliability, resilience, and performance, addressing complex technical challenges in the energy industry. Interns will work with MISO’s Markets & Grid R&D teams to understand and solve real-world engineering or market challenges, utilizing simulations and data analysis. The program also includes community service, social events, networking, and professional development activities. The internship culminates in a final presentation of project work and findings. MISO manages the electricity grid in the Central U.S., ensuring reliable power flow to 45 million Americans through research and advanced technology.

Requirements

  • Are graduate students with PhD candidates highly preferred, studying Electrical Engineering or Industrial Engineering (Operations Research).
  • Have taken classes or done projects in power systems, optimization, electricity markets, renewable energy, operations research, or engineering modeling.
  • Are comfortable learning tools such as Matlab, Python, PSS/E, TSAT, VSAT, or optimization software like AMPL, AIMMS, Gurobi.
  • Bring strong analytical skills and enjoy applying math, engineering, or physics concepts to real‑world grid or market challenges.
  • Communicate clearly, collaborate effectively, and are excited to work on applied research that supports planning, operations, reliability, and market design.
  • Must be available to start Wednesday, June 2nd, 2027 and continue through Friday, August 13th, 2027.
  • No VISA sponsorship opportunities, including OPT/CPT.

Responsibilities

  • Work with MISO’s Markets & Grid R&D teams to understand a real engineering or market challenge, define the research question, and explore possible solutions.
  • Run grid or market simulations using engineering and optimization tools, comparing different approaches to see which solution works best under real system conditions.
  • Analyze historical market or grid data to understand key patterns, evaluate new ideas, and help build recommendations that support more reliable and efficient market and grid operations.
  • Attend community service events, intern socials, networking activities, and development programming to help you grow your confidence, build relationships, and understand MISO’s broader mission.
  • Wrap up the summer with a final presentation summarizing your project work, recommendations, and areas of impact.
