About The Position

The Education Equity Project (EEP) is dedicated to creating an education system that upholds racial, disability, and gender justice, viewing education as a fundamental human right. The project provides extensive legal advocacy through direct services, policy advocacy, community education, coalition building, and strategic impact litigation. Their work is driven by a commitment to anti-discrimination and ensuring educational access for historically underserved populations, employing an intersectional approach to address diverse client and community needs. Specific direct services include advocating for K-12 students with disabilities to secure special education services and appropriate placements, representing K-12 students facing suspension or expulsion to maintain educational access, addressing discrimination and harassment in schools, and advocating for college student survivors of sexual assault and harassment. Public Counsel, the parent organization, is a nonprofit public interest law firm focused on civil rights, racial and economic justice, and empowering clients through comprehensive legal advocacy. It operates on a pro bono model, with staff and volunteers working towards justice via direct legal services, community education, and supporting community-led transformation through litigation and policy advocacy.

Requirements

• Must be in your first or second year of law school.
• Submit a cover letter, resume, and a writing sample, all in PDF form.
• Resume must reflect the law school currently enrolled in.
• Cover letter should discuss interest in interning with Public Counsel generally and EEP specifically.
• Applications from historically underrepresented students are strongly encouraged.
• Consider addressing lived experiences and experiences working with clients across a range of settings in the cover letter.

Responsibilities

• Assist EEP staff with legal research and writing.
• Conduct client intakes.
• Support client representation in litigation and administrative proceedings such as school discipline hearings, special education due process hearings, and Title IX hearings.
• Assist EEP staff with developing and presenting Know Your Rights materials for community education efforts.
