About The Position

As the Summer Day Camp Counselor, you will be directly responsible for the safety and well-being of Summer Day Camp attendees and by ensuring that the Mission of The Salvation Army is effectively carried out.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is desired.
  • General knowledge of games and activities appropriate for the 6-12 age range.
  • The position requires a background check to be completed, and all background check results will be reviewed.
  • at least 1 year of childcare experience
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain The Salvation Army Driver’s qualification standard
  • Able to speak, write and understand English in a manner sufficient for effective communication with leadership, field personnel, and clientele.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft products and ability to learn electronic reporting systems.
  • Ability to build positive relationships and report with children and families
  • Be a team player, a self-starter, able to handle several projects at the same time, and perform well with minimum supervision.
  • Demonstrate ability to think independently and exercise sound judgment.
  • Friendly, enthusiastic, and outgoing.
  • Good speaking, hearing and vision ability, and excellent manual dexterity
  • Lifting, pulling, and pushing of materials up to 25 pounds
  • May require bending, squatting, walking.
  • May require standing for extended periods.

Nice To Haves

  • experience working in a day camp setting and/or community center preferred
  • experience with diverse ethnic populations preferred
  • High levels of cultural competency preferred

Responsibilities

  • Prepare daily activities and lessons to ensure a positive experience for all campers.
  • Gather daily supplies as needed for each day’s lesson plan. Make sure all equipment is ready for the activity and is properly cleaned and stored after the activity for the day.
  • Adequately communicate with all colleagues, campers, and supervisors.
  • Correspond with campers’ parents/guardians keeping them informed of the camp activities and their children’s participation.
  • Be sure that all Corps areas are neat, clean, and in good repair.
  • Assist with all campers daily check-in duties and record all late arrivals and early pick-ups.
  • Lead and participate in all functions of summer programs; for example – recreation, meals, snacks, crafts, etc.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with The Salvation Army’s Safe from Harm program guidelines.
  • Assist in emergencies and fill out reports; accordingly, report incidents and/or accidents to the Summer Camp Director and/or Youth and Community Center Ministries Director.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with guests, students, co-workers, and supervisors. This includes but is not limited to such actions as: conflict resolution in a professional manner, courteous treatment of staff visitors and students; respect of others’ property and person; as well as professional and appropriate communication to and about students, co-workers and supervisors.
  • Provide a positive, encouraging, and uplifting attitude towards campers, counselors, and all summer program participants.
