About The Position

The position is responsible for providing leadership, ensuring safety of all participants and supervision of children in all planned activities in the presence of staff members. The role involves creating a safe and healthy environment, both physically and mentally, for a quality Children’s program. Responsibilities include assisting with feeding, changing, and transporting children with special needs, ensuring children are aware of rules and daily routines, and attending all staff meetings and YMCA requirements for in-service training. The counselor will assist in planning and implementing daily activities tailored to children's needs and interests, take responsibility for the quality of supplies, equipment, and materials, and report any suspicions of child abuse to supervisors. Ensuring proper sign-in/out procedures for children and reporting all accidents to the Supervisor are key duties. The role also involves assisting in the daily maintenance of the childcare area, ensuring safety and cleanliness, and sharing in regular housekeeping chores. Counselors are expected to embody YMCA Character Traits in all activities, establish positive relationships with each child, understand their level of understanding, and treat each child with respect and dignity. Working towards positive parent/staff relations, participating in member retention, special events, and fundraising, and completing all paperwork clearly and concisely are also part of the role. Staying up-to-date on emergency procedures and family center policies is required, along with performing other duties assigned by Management.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be CPR & First Aid Certified
  • Must have excellent leadership skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Desire and ability to work with children of all ages
  • Demonstrated responsibility and dependability
  • Follow through actions regarding communication with all parents
  • May be required to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. in various forms.
