About The Position

A privately held exploration and production company, Hunt Oil has successfully conducted petroleum operations worldwide for over 90 years and is one of the world’s leading independent energy companies. The mission of Hunt Oil Company is to be a growth-oriented industry leader respected throughout the world for the quality and competency of its people, the efficiency and scope of its operations, and its rich heritage of honesty and integrity. Today, the Company operates approximately 120,000 net acres across the Williston Basin in North Dakota and has remained a driving force in the state’s oil and gas sector for more than twenty years, participating as an early entrant in several of the premier unconventional shale plays in the United States. We are currently seeking a Subsurface Manager to lead the reservoir engineering and geoscience effort supporting both our operated Bakken development program and the company’s active evaluation of domestic growth opportunities.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop both engineers and geoscientists, and to arbitrate technical disagreement across disciplines.
  • Strong command of unconventional reservoir engineering: decline curve analysis, RTA, material balance, flowback and pressure diagnostics, and well interference evaluation.
  • Working fluency in geoscience workflows sufficient to direct and quality-check mapping, petrophysical interpretation, and geologic risking – regardless of which discipline the candidate comes from.
  • Demonstrated use of AI and analytics tools in technical work (Copilot, Claude, Python, Spotfire, Power BI, or similar), with the judgment to know when an AI-assisted result requires independent verification.
  • Proficiency with industry tools such as ARIES and IHS Harmony; strong Excel skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; experienced and comfortable presenting to senior leadership, partners, and counterparties.
  • Bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering or advanced degree in geology or geophysics, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 15 years of subsurface experience, with at least 5 years in unconventional resource plays; multi-basin experience strongly preferred.
  • Prior supervisory, team lead, or formal mentoring responsibility over technical staff, including experience with full-cycle unconventional development planning and execution strategy.
  • A&D experience – leading or materially contributing to the subsurface evaluation of acquisitions, divestitures, or trades, with exposure to both marketed processes and unsolicited or negotiated transactions.
  • Track record of presenting technical valuation cases to management or investment committees and seeing recommendations through to a decision.
  • Experience preparing or supporting SEC reserves, including third-party audit interaction, and running well and project economics.

  • Act as the primary subsurface interface to drilling, completions, production operations, land, commercial, and finance, and be accountable for the accuracy and defensibility of forecasts, reserves, valuations, and capital recommendations presented to senior management.
  • Directly supervise and mentor a team of reservoir engineers and geologists; building technical depth in unconventional reservoir management and geologic interpretation.
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and safety-first culture consistent with Hunt’s values.
  • Direct integrated development planning for the Bakken operated asset, including geological mapping efforts, geosteering, type curve development, annual budgets and long-term development planning and inventory assessment.
  • Manage SEC-compliant reserves and resource estimates for the region, including the quarterly and year-end processes and interaction with third-party auditors; review and approve well and project economics and defend capital allocation recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Collaborate with drilling, completions, production, land, and regulatory groups on well design, pad sequencing, post-well lookbacks, spacing units, and permitting, including NDIC and BLM requirements.
  • Lead the subsurface evaluation of domestic growth opportunities, divestitures, and trade opportunities, including unsolicited and negotiated approaches as well as competitive marketed processes.
  • Lead subsurface integration of acquired assets into the development plan, reserves, and surveillance process; support divestiture packages and buyer diligence.
