The Substitute Youth Services Specialist position performs responsible work planning, organizing, publicizing, and conducting library programs for children, young adults, and/or families. This role provides reader's advisory and reference services for patrons of all ages and of a diverse population. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Central Library Branch Manager or Supervising Children’s Librarian, depending on assignment. Duties may vary based on assigned branch, including planning, organizing, publicizing, and conducting library programs; working within an allowable budget; maintaining a program calendar; utilizing outside presenters; providing outreach in schools and community organizations; organizing tours and group visits; conducting and evaluating programs; designing creative displays; pulling and processing holds; providing reader's advisory and reference services; performing circulation functions; shelving materials; maintaining the collection; conducting reference interviews; opening, operating, and closing the library; promoting library services; assisting with training volunteers; and potentially assuming responsibility for a department or building in the absence of a manager. A flexible schedule including days, evenings, and weekends is required. The role is responsible for the appropriate use and maintenance of library equipment, tools, and resources, and requires regular and reliable attendance. Additional duties may be performed to support operational requirements.
