About The Position

The Library Media Specialist provides support to the instructional program by performing clerical functions related to collection, processing, circulation, maintenance, and inventory of library materials and/or textbooks. This role involves documenting losses, monitoring procedures, implementing age-appropriate programs for students utilizing library resources, selecting appropriate items to support classroom instruction, and instructing students on the proper use of library resources.

Requirements

  • Job related experience is preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A combination of education, training, and/or job experience necessary to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Pre-employment Proficiency Test may be required.
  • Meet employment requirements as applicable with state, federal, local laws and Board Policy.

Responsibilities

  • Assists teachers, students, and administrators in identifying resource materials for classroom and/or class assignments.
  • Conducts classes and/or activities in various formats (e.g., schedule library sessions, show videos, make presentations on books/authors) to promote the use and enjoyment of literature.
  • Evaluates books and/or periodicals for retention within the collection (e.g., repairing damaged books, recommending retirement of books and/or periodicals) to ensure the availability of books and library materials.
  • Maintains materials inventory (e.g., textbook, library books, library hardware/software, media equipment, and related instructional materials) to provide an up-to-date reference and ensure availability when required.
  • Monitors various activities involving fines of library and textbooks (e.g., overdue book notices, collecting monies for fines, maintaining reports clearing students of fines) to ensure fines are paid and documented.
  • Operates within the library budget for the purchase and maintenance of books and materials to maintain an updated and effective library inventory.
  • Participates in circulation activities (e.g., check materials in and out, restock shelves, reserve books for students, locate books) to ensure the literacy needs of students and teachers are met.
  • Processes library books, textbooks, periodicals, software, and related media materials (e.g., logging into master files, bar coding, shelving, producing required reports) to provide students and staff with required materials.
  • Responds to inquiries from students, staff, and parents (e.g., availability of books, finding appropriate reference documents, status of overdue fines) to provide information and/or direction as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
