About The Position

Kokua is seeking substitute teachers in the Rio Grande Valley, TX, for the 2025-26 school year. This part-time role offers the opportunity to make a positive impact in the community by connecting students with classroom role models and helping to address the teacher shortage crisis. Substitute teachers will have a flexible schedule, up to 5 days a week, with work hours typically from 7:00 AM to 4:15 PM, though some flexibility for earlier or later needs is a plus. The role allows for autonomy in choosing teaching assignments and locations, and provides a chance to add representation to classrooms through unique experiences. Substitute teachers will earn weekly paychecks, with rates varying based on educational qualifications, and can expect a quick hiring process. This position serves as a potential foot in the door for full-time roles in K-12 schools and offers a supportive community with extended support hours.

Requirements

• 1+ year(s) working with students in any setting (classroom, tutoring, coaching, camps, etc.)
• Minimum of 48 college credit hours
• Confidence to manage a classroom of students
• Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently
• Strong belief that every child has a unique & powerful gift to share with the world
• Ability to pass state & federal background checks

• Flexibility with work hours is a plus, as some schools may have earlier or later needs.

Responsibilities

• Lead classrooms and help create a safe, supportive learning environment.
• Step in where needed throughout the school day to support the campus, including lunch/recess supervision, hall and bathroom monitoring, tutoring, and proctoring during testing season.
