About The Position

St. Mary Catholic School in Plano, part of the Diocese of Joliet Catholic Schools, is seeking a Part-Time Substitute Teacher for the K-8 grade levels for the 2026-2027 school year. The substitute teacher is considered a ministerial employee and is expected to diligently support and strengthen the Catholic Church's value system, teachings, and mission through their personal and professional lives. The role involves creating a faith-focused learning environment, facilitating student academic and interpersonal growth, implementing absent teacher's plans, documenting student progress, and maintaining a safe and optimal learning environment. The substitute teacher will serve as a model of the Catholic faith in all aspects of their conduct and promote a classroom environment conducive to learning. They will differentiate instruction as directed, conduct individual and small group instruction, ensure student conduct aligns with school and Diocesan policies, and utilize technology to enhance lessons. Additional duties may be assigned by school administration.

Requirements

  • Hold a current Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL), a current Illinois Substitute License or a valid out of state certificate from a state with which Illinois has reciprocity.
  • Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Elementary Education or a related discipline that is applicable to the teaching assignment.
  • Excellent communication and classroom management skills are essential to success.
  • Knowledge of Catholic elementary school curriculum and concepts.

Nice To Haves

  • Practicing Catholic preferred but required to teach religion or theology courses.
  • Previous successful teaching experience in elementary or secondary education preferred.
  • Experience in differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all students preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a positive role model and support the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church at all times.
  • Create a faith-focused learning environment within the classroom and school.
  • Facilitate student success and growth in both academic and interpersonal skills.
  • Implement the absent teacher's written plans with fidelity, document student progress, activities, and outcomes as directed by the teacher.
  • Leave detailed notes for the absent teacher.
  • Create a flexible, safe, and optimal learning environment.
  • Serve as a model of the Catholic faith in words, actions, speech, dress, and demeanor.
  • Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction and student learning.
  • Differentiate instruction based upon student learning styles and needs, as per the teacher's directives.
  • Conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
  • Ensure that students conduct conforms with the school's standards and Diocesan policies.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Utilize available technology to enhance instruction.
  • Supervise students in activities that take place outside of the classroom during the school day, including activities involving school transportation, student arrival, and student dismissal.
  • Seek the advice and counsel of the principal and fellow educators as appropriate when dealing with classroom issues.
  • Use standard office equipment, Microsoft Office, and other technology to enhance lessons.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by school administration.
