About The Position

Holyoke Community College (HCC) is seeking a Substitute Teacher for the Adult Learning Center, an evening community education program offering adult basic education classes focused on high school equivalency and career/college readiness. The program aims to guide learners in identifying career goals and developing essential skills for employment, job training, or postsecondary education. The substitute teacher will provide academic instruction as needed in Level 1, 2, & 3 classes (equivalent to grades 3-12) across Reading, Writing, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics. Current needs are primarily in Reading/Writing, but applications for all subject areas are welcome. Classes are held in-person at the Picknelly Center (PAFEC) on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, running from September through June.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree
At least two years’ experience in Adult Basic Education or related field.
Commitment to learner-centered teaching
Ability to work effectively and flexibly with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body
Strong written and interpersonal communication and technology skills
Excellent organizational skills
Commitment to professional and program development.
Legal authorization to work in the United States.

Nice To Haves

Master’s degree
Strong knowledge of Adult Basic Education pedagogy
Understanding of issues confronted by ABE learners in Holyoke
Flexibility and creativity in curriculum development targeting student needs.

Responsibilities

Delivers classroom instruction at the HCC Adult Learning Center.
Provides substitute academic instruction as needed in Level 1, 2, & 3 classes in Reading, Writing, Science, Social Studies and/or Mathematics.
Creates written lesson plans for relevant subject areas, with assistance from HCC/ALC program coordinator.
Creates a learner-centered classroom environment.
Aligns subject content to curriculum with College and Career Readiness Standards and HiSET/GED curriculum.
Delivers differentiated classroom instruction in a variety of formats including large group, small group and/or one-on-one.
Incorporates technology and digital literacy into instruction, as appropriate.
Integrates and effectively uses volunteer tutors in the classroom.
Maintains attendance records.
Participates in relevant professional development opportunities as needed.
Attends weekly HCC/ALC staff meetings and annual retreats, as scheduled.
Meets with supervisor as scheduled.
Maintains compliance with DESE and ACLS guidelines.
Performs other duties as assigned.
