About The Position

The Northville District Library seeks an enthusiastic and customer-service oriented candidate for a part-time position in the Library’s Circulation Services Department. This is a non-union substitute position that requires working nights and weekends. The role involves providing assistance to patrons at the Circulation Desk, managing library materials, maintaining databases, and performing physical operations related to library services.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a strong orientation toward public service.
  • Proficiency with computers (Windows OS), cash registers, credit card terminals, and standard office equipment.
  • Strong critical thinking skills, high attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a cohesive team.

Nice To Haves

  • At least one year of general office experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide positive, pleasant, and professional assistance to patrons at the Circulation Desk, including issuing library cards, handling monetary transactions, and resolving conflicts gracefully.
  • Coordinate with both leadership and colleagues to ensure the delivery of accurate information and resources.
  • Answer incoming calls and direct patrons to the appropriate service areas.
  • Accurately check materials in and out, sort delivery items, and process interlibrary loan requests.
  • Inspect incoming items for damage or missing parts and take appropriate action.
  • Assist with library account management, database updates, and special departmental projects.
  • Lift, carry, and push carts of books and materials up to 40 lbs; stand, sit, or walk for extended periods; and comfortably bend, reach, or stoop to manage inventory.
