About The Position

Athra Systems/Crosstown Mental Health is seeking an experienced and compassionate Medical Director – Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Services to provide clinical leadership for a growing network of residential treatment centers, medical detoxification units, withdrawal management programs, and outpatient substance use treatment services. This physician leader will oversee the delivery of evidence-based addiction medicine while partnering with operational leadership to improve patient outcomes, support providers, and advance clinical quality across multiple facilities. The ideal candidate is a board-certified physician with expertise in addiction medicine, detoxification, and the treatment of co-occurring psychiatric disorders.

Requirements

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Active and unrestricted medical license (or ability to obtain licensure in multiple states).
  • Board Certified in Addiction Medicine, Addiction Psychiatry, Psychiatry, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Emergency Medicine.
  • Minimum five years of clinical experience treating substance use disorders.
  • Minimum three years of physician leadership or medical director experience.
  • Experience managing patients in detoxification, residential treatment, or inpatient addiction medicine settings.
  • Strong knowledge of medication-assisted treatment, withdrawal management, and co-occurring psychiatric disorders.
  • Board Certification in Addiction Medicine or Addiction Psychiatry.
  • Experience working with residential treatment centers, detoxification facilities, and behavioral health organizations.
  • Experience with program development and regulatory compliance.
  • DEA X-Waiver experience (if applicable under current regulations) and expertise with evidence-based MAT protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Provide medical oversight for residential treatment, medical detoxification, withdrawal management, and outpatient substance use disorder programs.
  • Establish and maintain evidence-based clinical protocols for the treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions.
  • Ensure appropriate medical management of detoxification, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), and ongoing addiction care.
  • Provide physician consultation for complex clinical cases.
  • Support continuity of care across all levels of addiction treatment.
  • Supervise and mentor physicians and advanced practice providers delivering addiction medicine services.
  • Participate in recruitment, onboarding, orientation, and ongoing provider development.
  • Conduct physician peer reviews and clinical performance evaluations.
  • Promote collaboration among multidisciplinary treatment teams.
  • Ensure compliance with Joint Commission standards, CMS regulations, State licensing requirements, DEA regulations, HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, and Accreditation standards.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives focused on patient safety and clinical outcomes.
  • Participate in medical staff committees, utilization review, and peer review activities.
  • Prepare facilities for regulatory surveys and accreditation reviews.
  • Assist in the development and expansion of addiction treatment programs, including Medical detoxification, Residential treatment, Partial hospitalization (PHP), Intensive outpatient (IOP), Outpatient medication management, and Medication-assisted treatment (MAT).
  • Evaluate emerging treatment models and evidence-based practices to enhance patient care.
  • Partner with executive leadership, facility administrators, nursing leadership, and behavioral health teams to improve operational performance and patient outcomes.
  • Support initiatives focused on patient throughput, length of stay, treatment engagement, and successful discharge planning.
  • Assist with development of clinical workflows and standardized treatment protocols.
  • Participate in executive leadership meetings and medical staff committees.
  • Review adverse events, incident reports, and quality metrics.
  • Develop policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines related to addiction medicine.
  • Support strategic planning and clinical growth initiatives.
