About The Position

The Opinion Editor for The Nevada Sagebrush is responsible for ensuring that readers are presented with a balanced selection of well-written and well-argued opinions on a weekly basis. This role involves writing and editing articles throughout the week, and regularly publishing content on the Nevada Sagebrush website and social media channels. The position requires strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced newsroom environment. A foundational understanding of media ethics and media law, particularly as they relate to reporting on a college campus, is also expected.

Requirements

  • Be a student of the University of Nevada, Reno.
  • Maintain a 2.00 GPA and be enrolled in at least 12 credits (unless a graduating senior).
  • Possess strong leadership skills.
  • Have experience with AP style and writing for print or online publications.
  • Have experience writing headlines.
  • Demonstrate a strong voice within articles and the ability to work effectively under deadline pressure.
  • Be familiar with current Sagebrush work (articles, multimedia, social media).
  • Have experience with social media and WordPress.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (especially InDesign).
  • Experience with multimedia programs (Premiere Pro, Audition, After Effects).

Responsibilities

  • Manage and cultivate relationships with contributing writers, as the Opinion section relies heavily on their work.
  • Solicit new contributors for the Opinion section.
  • Edit articles and multimedia content for clarity, accuracy, style, and adherence to AP standards.
  • Assist section editors with editing workload and production needs.
  • Ensure timely review and return of submitted articles on the same day when necessary to meet publication deadlines.
  • Aid in volunteer recruitment, outreach, and retention efforts.
  • Help organize fundraising initiatives, networking opportunities, and community events.
  • Build and maintain relationships with campus organizations, community partners, and media contacts.
  • Collaborate with staff to enhance newsroom communication and workflow.
  • Uphold media ethics, newsroom standards, and professional journalism practices.
  • Contribute reporting, writing, and multimedia content as needed.
  • Mentor staff members and assist with onboarding and newsroom development.
