Student Worker - Sagebrush Deputy Editor

About The Position

The Deputy Editor assists the Executive Editor in overseeing newsroom operations and maintaining editorial standards across The Nevada Sagebrush. Responsibilities include editing articles and multimedia content, supporting volunteer outreach efforts and helping build community connections for fundraising initiatives and networking events. The Deputy Editor will also assist section editors with editing workload and provide additional newsroom leadership and support when needed. In the absence of the Executive Editor, the Deputy Editor is expected to help manage day-to-day editorial operations and ensure production continues smoothly. Candidates should demonstrate strong leadership, communication and organizational skills, along with the ability to collaborate across sections in a fast-paced newsroom environment. Knowledge of media law, ethical journalism standards and First Amendment protections is expected. Applicants should also have a basic understanding of media ethics and media law, especially as they pertain to reporting on a college campus.

Requirements

  • Be a student of the University of Nevada, Reno.
  • Maintain a 2.00 GPA and be enrolled in at least 12 credits unless a graduating senior.
  • Have strong leadership and good news-judgment.
  • Must have experience with AP style and writing for print or online
  • Have experience writing headlines
  • Have a strong voice within articles and work well under deadline.
  • Should be familiar with current Sagebrush work (articles, multimedia, social media)
  • Should have experience with social media and Word Press

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (especially InDesign) is preferred
  • Experience with multimedia programs (Premiere Pro, Audition, After Effects) is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Executive Editor with day-to-day newsroom operations and editorial planning.
  • Edit articles and multimedia content for clarity, accuracy, style and AP standards.
  • Support section editors with editing workload and production needs.
  • Ensure timely articles submitted for edits are reviewed and returned the same day when necessary to meet publication deadlines.
  • Help oversee publication deadlines and ensure timely content production.
  • Provide leadership and operational support when the Executive Editor is unavailable.
  • Assist with volunteer recruitment, outreach and retention efforts.
  • Help organize fundraising initiatives, networking opportunities and community events.
  • Build and maintain relationships with campus organizations, community partners and media contacts.
  • Collaborate with staff to strengthen newsroom communication and workflow.
  • Uphold media ethics, newsroom standards and professional journalism practices.
  • Contribute reporting, writing and multimedia content as needed.
  • Mentor staff members and assist with onboarding and newsroom development.
