About The Position

The Broadcast Director oversees the production and development of The Nevada Sagebrush’s weekly 15–30 minute broadcast program while helping lead the organization’s multimedia and television journalism efforts. This position is responsible for maintaining strong editorial and production standards across all broadcast content and helping reporters develop multimedia storytelling skills. The Broadcast Director will assist in preparing scripts, guiding reporters through the creation of television packages and ensuring high-quality audio, lighting and video editing throughout each production cycle. The position also includes leading workshops and training sessions focused on multimedia production, on-camera reporting and television journalism fundamentals. The Broadcast Director is expected to help create and implement strategic plans for newsroom and broadcast operations while supporting measurable audience growth across digital and multimedia platforms. Candidates should be able to analyze and respond to trends impacting the Reno and University communities and help shape coverage that is timely, relevant and engaging. Responsibilities also include collaborating closely with newsroom leadership and section editors to maintain production schedules, strengthen workflow and achieve organizational goals. The Broadcast Director should be comfortable adapting newsroom resources to emerging technology and maintaining proficiency in digital publishing and multimedia platforms. Applicants should possess strong leadership, communication and organizational skills, along with experience in video production, editing and multimedia journalism. Knowledge of media law, ethical journalism standards and First Amendment protections is expected. Applicants should also have a basic understanding of media ethics and media law, especially as they pertain to reporting on a college campus.

Requirements

  • Be a student of the University of Nevada, Reno.
  • Maintain a 2.00 GPA and be enrolled in at least 12 credits unless a graduating senior
  • Have strong leadership and good news-judgment
  • Must have experience with AP style and writing for print or online
  • Have experience writing headlines
  • Have a strong voice within articles and work well under deadline
  • Should be familiar with current Sagebrush work (articles, multimedia, social media)
  • Should have experience with social media and TV production

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (especially InDesign) is preferred
  • Experience with multimedia programs (Premiere Pro, Audition, After Effects) is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Oversee production of the weekly 15–30 minute broadcast show
  • Assist with script writing, rundown preparation and story planning
  • Help reporters create and refine television packages and multimedia stories
  • Ensure strong audio, lighting, editing and overall production quality
  • Train reporters through workshops focused on multimedia and TV reporting skills

  • Support audience growth initiatives across broadcast, web and social platforms
  • Analyze trends and issues affecting the Reno and University communities
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with campus and community partners
  • Ensure broadcast and digital content complies with media law, ethical standards and First Amendment protections
  • Maintain proficiency in digital publishing and multimedia technology.
  • Assist in mentoring staff and providing constructive feedback on multimedia work
  • Help oversee newsroom workflow, scheduling and production timelines.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by newsroom leadership
