Student Worker - Sagebrush Opinion Editor

About The Position

The Opinion Editor ensures readers of The Nevada Sagebrush are presented with a balanced set of well-written, well-argued opinions weekly. Applicants are expected to be able to write and edit articles throughout the week and publish articles regularly on the Nevada Sagebrush website and social media channels. Candidates should demonstrate strong leadership, communication and organizational skills, along with the ability to collaborate across sections in a fast-paced newsroom environment. Applicants should also have a basic understanding of media ethics and media law, especially as they pertain to reporting on a college campus.

Requirements

  • Be a student of the University of Nevada, Reno.
  • Maintain a 2.00 GPA and be enrolled in at least 12 credits unless a graduating senior.
  • Have strong leadership skills.
  • Must have experience with AP style and writing for print or online.
  • Have experience writing headlines.
  • Have a strong voice within articles and work well under deadline.
  • Should be familiar with current Sagebrush work (articles, multimedia, social media).
  • Should have experience with social media and Word Press.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (especially InDesign) is preferred.
  • Experience with multimedia programs (Premiere Pro, Audition, After Effects) is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain relationships with contributing writers, and solicit for new contributors.
  • Edit articles and multimedia content for clarity, accuracy, style, and AP standards.
  • Support section editors with editing workload and production needs.
  • Ensure timely articles submitted for edits are reviewed and returned the same day when necessary to meet publication deadlines.
  • Assist with volunteer recruitment, outreach, and retention efforts.
  • Help organize fundraising initiatives, networking opportunities, and community events.
  • Build and maintain relationships with campus organizations, community partners, and media contacts.
  • Collaborate with staff to strengthen newsroom communication and workflow.
  • Uphold media ethics, newsroom standards, and professional journalism practices.
  • Contribute reporting, writing, and multimedia content as needed.
  • Mentor staff members and assist with onboarding and newsroom development.
