About The Position

Tutors will work at local elementary schools to provide tutoring services to early elementary children one on one. This is a student worker position at Texas A&M International University, with proposed minimum pay commensurate with experience, and is located in Laredo, Texas. The role involves conducting tutoring sessions where students are actively involved, reviewing course concepts, offering alternative explanations, and providing strategies for reinforcement. Tutors will also help students identify resources and develop independent study skills. Other related duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Enrolled at least half-time, 6 credit hours per semester for undergraduate and 3 credit hours per semester for graduates.
  • Maintain a TAMIU overall GPA of 2.0 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduate students.
  • Must meet all other requirements as stated in TAMIU’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAPP).
  • Proficiency in use of personal computer workstation with common software applications.
  • Ability to organize and multitask functions to ensure compliance with deadlines.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal relationship and communication skills.
  • Problem analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to learn and use multiple software programs.
  • Position requires on campus, face-to-face interactions.
  • Position requires maintaining a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.
  • Work schedules are created by the department based on departmental needs but ensure it does not conflict with class schedule.
  • Promptly complete all required trainings.
  • TB screening.
  • Reliable transportation to travel to assigned school.
  • Undergraduate student must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours per semester of college-level courses or accepted remedial courses.
  • International undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours to meet the federal immigration guidelines.
  • Must maintain a 2.0 TAMIU overall GPA.
  • Graduate students must be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours per semester.
  • International graduate students must enroll in 9 semester credit hours in order to meet the federal immigration guidelines.
  • Must maintain a 3.0 TAMIU overall GPA.
  • Students who will be graduating may enroll for less than half time for their final semester.
  • Must submit proof of graduation.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct tutoring sessions in which each student is actively involved in exploring and learning the material.
  • Review course concepts, provide alternate explanations, and offer multiple strategies for reviewing and reinforcing information.
  • Help students to identify resources and to develop problem-solving strategies they can use when studying on their own.
  • Collect and submit data to the LTPR at the end of the semester.
  • Attend mandatory training sessions and meetings.
  • Maintain literacy center inventory.
  • Participate in occasional recruiting events.
  • Submit time sheet biweekly.
