About The Position

This position is available only to enrolled American University students. The Graduate Writing Tutor serves as the face of the Writing Center, primarily responsible for providing individual support for student writing across the curriculum. A tutoring session involves assessing a student’s needs for the assignment, establishing and managing achievable goals for the session, and collaborating on a strategy for next steps. Additional responsibilities include submitting post-session reports, attending bi-weekly workshops, participating in training sessions, and participating in special events. Consultants may also lead workshops, participate in peer review sessions, and promote the Writing Center through in-class visits.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited institution.
  • Current enrollment in AU Graduate Program.
  • 2 years of related experience.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Organization skills.

  • Customer service skills.
  • Must submit a resume and a writing sample that showcase your academic writing abilities.
  • Must submit 1 - 2 letters of recommendation from AU faculty who can speak to your work.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual support for student writing in classes across the curriculum.
  • Assess a student’s needs for the assignment, establish and manage achievable goals for the session, and collaborate on a strategy for next steps.
  • Submit post-session reports.
  • Attend bi-weekly workshops.
  • Participate in training sessions.
  • Participate in special events during the semester.
  • Lead workshops for groups of students.
  • Participate in peer review sessions.
  • Promote the Writing Center through in-class visits.
  • Engage students in conversations to help develop their ideas.
  • Work with student writers and their texts to help them become familiar with the techniques that successful writers use to plan, draft, revise, and edit written documents.
  • Assess attitudes about writing and set goals for consultations.
  • Work with both scheduled students and drop-ins.
  • Consistently and properly document student contact in the Writing Center’s online scheduling system.
  • Follow policies and procedures for at-work behavior, shift coverage, etc., as detailed in the staff handbook.
  • Participate in staff meetings and training workshops.
  • Conduct classroom visits to publicize writing center services.
