About The Position

This position serves a dual role, primarily as a Student Support Services Coordinator (TRIO) and secondarily as an Academic Advisor II. The TRIO Coordinator, under the Director of TRIO Student Support Services, provides educational advising, career/life planning, assistance with student registration, and support services to first-generation, low-income, and/or students with disabilities, adhering to the TRIO SSS Grant requirements. This is a grant-funded role, with continued employment dependent on grant funding. The Academic Advisor II reports to an Associate Dean and utilizes strong interpersonal skills to offer one-on-one advising, coordinate student services, and guide students on degree selection and completion by interpreting the college catalog and academic policies. This role involves participation in academic advising, retention, and recruitment activities, as well as tracking and reporting. The Academic Advisor II assists students with problem-solving and goal identification, analyzes situations, and determines necessary actions. They communicate professionally with diverse groups, maintain accurate records, and contribute to the college's mission. The role provides academic, transfer, and career advising, financial aid assistance, and general guidance. The Academic Advisor II also collaborates on campus teams, responds to evolving needs, and supports new student success programs. Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in counseling, education, or related field with a minimum of four years of experience working with populations similar to SSS participants or working with a diverse student and adult population in advising and counseling.
  • OR Associate’s degree from an accredited institution and six years of experience with a diverse student and adult population.
  • OR equivalent education and experience that will provide the necessary knowledge, skill and abilities to perform the functions of the position.
  • High School and Post-Secondary experience essential.
  • Demonstrated experience in programs that improve access and success for underrepresented populations, including adult Learners, in higher education essential.
  • Ability to administer and evaluate assessment testing.
  • Ability to provide academic and career/life counseling and mentoring.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain statistical data.
  • Strong written, verbal, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to positively interact and engage students in an academic setting that is welcoming and responsive to students’ academic and career goals.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize duties and responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of higher education degree requirements, current practices in higher education, and utilize relevant technology.
  • Ability to provide thoughtful academic, transfer, and career advising.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze placement data and aptitude assessments.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively speak in public and present educational workshops.
  • Maintain discretion and professionalism.
  • Organize and prioritize work while exercising flexibility, teamwork, and humor.
  • Commitment to working effectively with students, employees, and community members of all backgrounds.
  • Must be a resident of the State of Colorado or obtain residency within 30 days of hire and perform all work duties within the state.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Completed counseling internship or practicum preferred.
  • Experience in higher education counseling preferred.
  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with college academic requirements.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of economically and educationally disadvantaged students.

Responsibilities

  • Provide educational advising, career/life planning, and support services to TRIO SSS participants.
  • Assist students with registration processes.
  • Provide one-on-one student advising, including guidance on degree selection and completion.
  • Interpret the college catalog and academic policies and guidelines.
  • Participate in academic advising, retention, and recruitment activities.
  • Assist with tracking and reporting activities.
  • Help students with problem-solving and goal identification.
  • Communicate professionally with students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate manual and/or electronic records.
  • Work collaboratively as a member of a team.
  • Assist with promoting the vision and mission of Colorado Mountain College.
  • Provide academic, transfer, and career advising, registration and financial aid assistance.
  • Respond to evolving demographic, technological, and community needs.
  • Provide leadership and support in the development of new and enhanced student success programs.
  • Interpret assessment tests for TRIO applicants.
  • Identify, accept, evaluate, and/or make student referrals for TRIO program participants.
  • Advise and create academic plans for TRIO program participants.
  • Perform risk assessments and personal guidance for TRIO program participants.
  • Evaluate TRIO program participants' progress.
  • Plan and implement field trips and cultural events for TRIO program participants.
  • Plan and implement workshops for TRIO program participants.
  • Coordinate and/or assist with tutoring programs and identify/train tutors.
  • Collaborate with SSS coordinators at other campuses for college transfer visits.
  • Monitor and enter participant data and maintain participant records for TRIO.
  • Prepare and maintain TRIO program documentation and assist in developing program reports.
  • Assist with developing and disseminating TRIO program information and promote services.
  • Serve as TRIO program representative and coordinate with internal and external parties.
  • Advise students in a one-on-one setting, providing high-quality guidance, mentoring, and tools for success.
  • Interpret placement assessments and co-create academic plans with students.
  • Assist students in the selection and registration of courses, and explore transfer institution and career options.
  • Discuss options and next steps for students on academic suspension and probation.
  • Monitor student progress and maintain appropriate records for individual student assistance and retention initiatives.
  • Maintain connections with faculty and academic affairs staff to develop student success and retention initiatives.
  • Collaborate with registration, financial aid, and marketing staff.
  • Participate and coordinate campus events such as orientation, success seminars, and campus visits.
  • Assist with graduation.
  • Serve on campus committees and potentially supervise work-study students.
  • Generate creative means to develop and present student seminars and workshops.
  • Assist with outreach to local high schools and TRIO programs.
  • Adapt to evolving communication modalities, including college-wide applications and social media.
  • Build and maintain relationships with relevant community entities and refer students to services.
  • Connect and communicate with transfer institutions.
