About The Position

The Digital Services Student Assistant will image a variety of rare and unique Special Collections materials, following digitization and metadata standards; work with physical collections, use a variety of imaging hardware to scan items, and save files in standard formats for storage and display. The student assistant will arrange and describe archival materials in preparation for digitization, and record descriptive metadata for processed and unprocessed materials. Position duties include preparation of materials, digitization, and quality control based on professional standards. All work will be supervised by University Libraries Special Collections staff.

Requirements

  • Current undergraduate student at The University of Alabama.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work on tasks independently.
  • Ability to learn and master complex tasks.
  • Competency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong organizational skills including filing items according to established organizational structure.
  • Familiarity with basic archival concepts.
  • Must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment.
  • Must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters.
  • Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment.
  • Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment background investigation and information obtained from social media and other internet sources.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with digitization of primary source materials.
  • Previous experience with scanning equipment.
  • Previous experience with image file formats.
  • Previous experience with photo editing software.
  • Prior work experience in a library or cultural heritage institution.
  • Familiarity with Special Collections research.
  • Ability to work consecutive semesters.
