About The Position

City Year Student Success Coach AmeriCorps Member serving at Brookside Charter School. This is a full-time, 10-month contract position classified as an AmeriCorp/City Year Member. The role reports to the Teacher and Principal, as well as the City Year Impact Manager. Brookside Charter School is a tuition-free public charter school serving Pre-K through 8th-grade students within Kansas City Public School boundaries. The school emphasizes rigorous academics, leadership skills, and the development of the whole child. It fosters a caring community with well-trained staff, engaged families, and supportive community partners, aiming to empower students for future success. The school is committed to diversity, culturally relevant teaching, family and community engagement, restorative practices, and social and emotional learning.

Responsibilities

  • Embrace and advance the mission and vision of Brookside Charter School and City Year to maximize students' opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed.
  • Build consistent, positive, and developmentally appropriate relationships with students.
  • Model maturity, integrity, professionalism, teamwork, continuous improvement, motivation, and excellence.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to support a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment for students.
  • Use restorative, relationship-centered, and strengths-based approaches when supporting students.
  • Serve in an assigned classroom during the school year and actively partner with the classroom teacher.
  • Provide individual, small-group, and classroom-based support.
  • Reinforce teacher-led lessons, learning goals, routines, and instructional expectations.
  • Help students practice academic skills, complete learning tasks, and develop confidence and persistence.
  • Use approved instructional materials, strategies, and student data to provide targeted support under the direction of the classroom teacher and City Year staff.
  • Communicate student progress, concerns, and successes to the appropriate teacher and City Year supervisor.
  • Provide encouragement, coaching, and check-ins that promote positive behavior and engagement.
  • Support classroom routines and help students develop habits that contribute to academic and personal success.
  • Collaborate with Brookside Charter School to support and lead schoolwide events and community-building activities.
